Lands End to John O'Groats will start at 9.00am on Saturday 9th September.
Hard to say really. There are many answers -
Because it's there,
To mark the Millennium,
To achieve an ambition,
To see if we can do it,
As an incentive to get fit,
To enjoy the scenery,
To get to know a bit more about our country,
To raise money for charity,
For the same reason as the other thousands of people who do it every year,
As a follow on to the C2C etc.
As it says on the CTC Web site "To cycle from the far South West to the far North East of mainland Britain is an ambition which many cyclists fulfil each year."
We have taken what we thought to be the best of various routes which we have looked at. These include the CTC B and B route, some Sustrans routes, various ones on the many web sites we found and also a couple of books. Lands End to John O'Groats by Simon Brown and Lands End to John O'Groats - The Great British Bicycle adventure - by Phil Horsley. ..................
Well it varies. To varying degrees we have been ......................
a) cycling together each Sunday morning for the last twelve months - about 30 -40 miles on average. (Mainly Bill and Chris, Phil more recently)
b) Completing some big charity rides - eg the Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool ride in June, the Oxfam Cheshire Ride in September. (Mainly Chris and Bill))
c) Riding with an offshoot group of the Merseyside CTC on a Wednesday - about 70 - 80 miles each time. (Mainly Phil and Bill)
d) The Tuesday Night rides with the Ledsham group from the Chester and North Wales DA of the CTC. (Chris)
d) The CTC Bob Clift memorial ride in July - 100 miles An Audax Event(All)
e) The "Wild Wales Challenge" on 27 August 2000. This looks like a really exciting ride - our last major test before we go. (Bill and Chris)
f) Playing Golf (Bill and Phil)
g) Visiting the Gym (Chris)
h) Just riding
The question is - IS IT ENOUGH?
We all have touring bikes.
Chris has an Orbit Gold Medal,

(This is actually a Harrier, but the Gold Medal is similar)
Bill a Thorn Club Tour
from St John St Cycles,
and Phil a Dawes
Galaxy.

Almost everyone it seems. Just type John O'Groats into a search engine (I like Google) and you will get lots of web pages from groups like us. ScotRail told me there were so many people with Bikes catching the train from Wick that in the summer they ran a Transit to carry more that the train could manage. (I did wonder why they didn't use a rail truck!)
