CASTLE - STAY AWAY
PEOPLE have been warned to stay away from a dangerous castle.
Conwy County Council is urging people to keep clear of Gwrych Castle, Abergele after more floors in the central wing fell through, leaving the 19th century landmark a crumbling shell. The castle´s corridors and stairways are already rotten and the council believes the latest setback has made the building even more unsafe.
It is unclear how badly
the collapse has affected the already fragile structure of the castle,
which is owned by American millionaire Nick Tavaglione but council officials
are now visit the site to assess the damage.
Founder and Secretary of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, Mark Baker,
of Prestatyn, who is spearheading a campaign to restore the castle, said
the collapse was not surprising. He said: "It was bound to happen,
the castle has been in a dangerous state for years but nothing´s
been done. The collapse just highlights the neglect of the castle over
the past 14 years." It is the latest in a long line of disasters
to hit Gwrych Castle, which has been plagued by fires and vandalism.
