Randolph Turpin vs. Sugar Ray Robinson

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On 10 July 1951, Turpin after training at Gwrych Castle for several months. carried off the world middleweight title beating America's Sugar Ray Robinson in front of 18,000 people at Earls Court in London. Turpin was at the Castle for nearly a year while he was training for his fight against Sugar Ray Robinson. At Gwrych he stayed in the Victoria Suite.

 

This picture of champion boxer Randolph Turpin was sent by Margaret Roberts of Llanfairfechan whose grandmother Grace Thomas is shown smiling in his embrace. The photograph was taken at Gwrych Castle where Turpin held boxing exhibitions in the early 1950's.
