Alun Pugh - Annual Report 2005

Hafodunos Hall by Alun Pugh, Culture Minister for Wales

"Hafodunos Hall, Llangernyw and Nant Clwyd House, Ruthin are two extremely important grade 1 listed historic buildings in the constituency. Hafodunos is in private ownership and has been empty for many years. An arson attack in October last year severely damaged the house but a report indicates that, subject to certain works to safeguard loose materials and to stabilise the structure, there is no need for demolition. The owner’s contractor has agreed with the local authority that he will carry out this work.

…….It is not always possible to find a new use for large historic buildings, particularly when severely damaged such as Hafodunos. I hope that a way forward can be found for the building. If a viable scheme can be found the Assembly is always pleased to consider applications for historic repairs. Since the last election, grants of £3.5 million have been made for important historic buildings. I was pleased to launch Mark Baker’s new book: Hafodunos Hall – Triumph of the Martyr. I read my book with great interest and must congratulate Mark on his accomplishment of a thoroughly researched historical book."
