John Gibson
John Gibson was born in Gyffin, near Conwy in North Wales during the summer of 1790. He later died in Rome on 27th January 1866. Gibson was a well known and respected British sculptor who worked from Rome and was the central figure of the Anglo-Roman school, becoming one of the leading exponents of Neo-classicism in the 19th century. He had English, American and Italian patrons and was honoured by academies throughout Europe. Two of his brothers, Solomon Gibson (c. 1796–1886) and Benjamin Gibson (1811–51), were also sculptors. He was very good friends with Margaret and Henry Robertson Sandbach who were both his patrons. Following Margaret's untimely death, Henry continued to commission Gibson to design sculpture for his family home at Hafodunos, Llangernyw.
