Tests
for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the name for a group of eye conditions in which the optic nerve is damaged at a point where it leaves the eye.
Your eye needs a certain amount of pressure to keep the eyeball in shape so that it can work properly. In some people the damage is caused by raised eye pressure. Others may have an eye pressure within normal limits but damage occurs because there is a weakness in the optic nerve.
Glaucoma is associated with changes in the optic nerve which may be related to raised pressure in the eye.
The treatment is by eye drops or surgery.
Some people are particularly at risk –
§ Older patients
§ Inherited risk factors
§ Diabetics
§ Black ethnic minority groups
§ A close blood relative with the condition increases the risk
Tests for glaucoma include observation of the optic nerve (fundoscopy), intra ocular pressure (tonometry) and visual field examination. These tests should be repeated every year.
The following groups of people are entitled to free NHS
examinations –
§ All patients 60 or over
§ Those aged 40 or over with close blood relatives with glaucoma
§ Those patients diagnosed with having glaucoma
