    January 1999 Crime Figures

There has been an upsurge in burglary, theft from cars and theft of cars in Billericay, especially in the Queens Park, Little Burstead, Stock Road, Potash Road, Greenfields Close and Southend Road. These are the streets that have experienced t e crime wave at the moment, it does not mean it will not spread to other parts of Billericay. But the good news is, YOU can help stop it.

The Police need information as soon as possible and YOU are best placed to provide it. Many of these crimes take place during the between 2pm and 6pm, as well as at night.

Adopt the village approach , if you see strangers or strange cars in your area, take a second look. Are they hanging around until you are not looking? Are they paying a lot of attention to an empty house or car?

    NW Items for Sale

Haynes Home Security Manuals: £3 (£9 in the shops)

Golf Marking Kits: £4 (£6 in the shops)

Tamper Proof Tax Holders: £1 each

Call us at the Police Station or come to a meeting if you wish to purchase any of them - all great value and make good Christmas gifts!

This is not a full list of crime for January - we ran out of space, but it does provide a good indication of the size of the crime wave

It is probable that much of this crime was drug related. If you think that drug dealers and drug takers are in your area, please call either Kevin Hopton on 636454 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111

You do not have to give your name

Think about the cost of each of these crimes. The owner will probably have to pay the first £200 of each insurance claim, plus the cost of damage to the car. Add to this the time taken to get the car repaired. It could be you next.

If you see anything suspicious, report it straight away.

So when did you last mark your property?

At the end of January we attended a presentation at Basildon Police Station, one of the presenters, Inspector Chatterton, told us of the huge amount of recovered stolen property that could not be returned to rightful owners bec use their is no way of identifying them. Marking your property will not necessarily prevent theft of your possessions, but when they are recovered, the Police will be able to get them back to you.

There is another side to the story, suspected criminals have been apprehended with what looks like stolen property. They claim the good were purchased at boot sales or the like - if the property is marked the police could easily check and identify if the property is stolen.

So PLEASE mark your property. Have a check around your home and look for property you have acquired since you last did a marking session.

If you need help or advice, give us a call at the police station.

    Streetwise kids are safer kids

Streetwise is an exciting new interactive safety education centre in Bournemouth. It is a registered charity and its purpose is to give kids the education they need to be safer on the streets.

The process is based on interactive learning, the kids take part in the whole process as if it is real life. Interactive learning offers the opportunity for kids to experience the real life dangers in a controlled environment so that they can learn h w to avoid the dangers and what to do in an emergency.

Streetwise has been built inside a warehouse and the scenarios used are life size and life-like. The scenarios used include a high street with shops and offices, a park, a beach, railway track, heathland, building site, electricity sub-station, dar alleyways and a two story house.

We are trying to plan a trip for up to 53 adults and kids on Saturday 15 May. The cost will be £8.50 for adults and £7.50 for kids. The cost includes coach return fare to Billericay and entrance to Streetwise. The plan is to leave B llericay at 07:30, arrive at Streetwise at 10:00, start the Streetwise experience at 10:30 and finish it about 13:00; that should leave a couple of hours to look around Bournemouth before leaving at around 17:00, arriving Billericay about 19:30.

All kids must by accompanied by adults, we have no supervision for unaccompanied kids. We suggest the minimum age of five for kids going into Streetwise. If you are interested please reserve your places by using the reply slip at the bottom of the page, if we get enough interest we will book the trip, if not we will return your uncashed cheque.

This looks like a great way for kids and adults to gain experience in a controlled environment. What they learn there could save a life, maybe their own.

If you think they are, call the Police straight away, you do not need to give your name or phone number.

Get as much detail as you can, description of the people, what they are wearing, registration number, make and colour of their vehicle and tell the Police at Billericay.

If you see a crime in progress don’t hesitate to call 999.

The Police need all the information they can get, even if they do not get to talk to the people you report, linking a person or vehicle to the scene of a crime helps them narrow the field.

The Police can, and do, catch many criminals, but they need YOUR help by supplying that vital information.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Inspector Steve Tutton, who has replaced Inspector Michele Dunn at Billericay Police Station. Inspector Dunn has moved to Basildon Police Station as Acting Chief Inspector and we would lik to thank her for all the help and support she gave us. Inspector Tutton is keen on Neighbourhood Watch and will be attending one of our members meetings, we know you will make him welcome.

Please reserve ____ adult places at £8.50 each and ____ child places at £7.50 each for the Streewise trip on Saturday 15 May.

Cheque for the total of £______________ made payable to ‘Billericay Neighbourhood Watch Schemes’ enclosed. The cost includes return coach trip and admission. If we fail to get enough sales to cover the cost of the coach, we will return your chequ .
