    Womens Safety Evening

The evening was a great success and enjoyed by all those who attended. Many thanks to Mike Savage and Sandra Burton for all the co-ordination and arrangements; Phoenix Karate Club and Special Constable Glen Higbee for the self defence training and of course Essex Ford for their magnificent support for this Neighbourhood Watch initiative. Essex Ford laid on the facilities, technicians to give the maintenance training and the refreshments.

We have enough names to fill another two evenings and we will be in contact with all those of you who applied but did not get a place on the evening.
It is probable that much of this crime was drug related. If you think that drug dealers and drug takers are in your area, please call Kevin Hopton on 636454 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. you do not need to give your name. Your information could stop a crime or even save a life.

    B-B-Q and Treasure Hunt

We plan to have a walking Treasure Hunt around the town (about 2 miles) followed by a BBQ at the Police Station on Sunday 9 July. We have expert chefs on hand to prepare the most succulent food (if you believe that you will believe anything). The BBQ is free, but please bring your own drinks and nibbles. Please let us know if you will be coming, so we can get enough burgers, by returning the form below.

    Quiz Night

Fancy an evening getting the grey matter going? We are planning a Quiz Night on Saturday 30 September, cost will be £6.50 per person (which includes supper). There will be a bar available and prizes for the best table. If you are interested please fill in the form below and include a cheque. We will not cash your cheque until September and if we do not get enough support we will return your cheque to you. Tables of about eight people will be good, but not a requirement. Return to Streetwise The last trip was a great success and we are planning a revisit. The number of people on the coach is a critical factor for the costs. We estimate the cost of the whole day out will be £8.50 for adults and £7.50 for kids - that includes return coach fare Billericay/Bournemouth and entry to Streetwise. We plan to run the trip in October, if your are interested please fill in the form below. We are sorry but we cannot accept unaccompanied children. Send no money now, if we get enough support, we will ask you for it later.

    Door to Door Sales, again!

With the warmer weather comes more and more door to door sales. We have had reports of a company selling security devices on the doorstep, although there have been no reports of shoddy goods the products are expensive and the sales people have been described as 'pushy'. Please do remember that your chances of being able to contact a door to door sales person after a sale has been made is very slim. Think before you buy. Most of the goods on sale can be purchased from High Street shops, often at lower prices. If the sales person gets pushy, ask them to leave and close the door. If they persist, call the Police. Please consider any elderly neighbours you may have, they can be vulnerable when faced with pushy sales people, if you do see what looks like a hard sale going on, please intervene and protect your neighbour. You never know, in the future you may want the same kind of help. Trading Standards are there to help Remember Essex Trading Standards are there to help you with problems on consumer law, the service is free and they will be able to advise you on your rights and what action you can take to get a fair deal. Their number is 01245 341888. If they cannot talk to you right away, leave a message on the answerphone and they will call you back and give you help and advice.

    BBQ time is here again

When the sun comes out we all head for the back garden and set fire to sausages and burgers. Before you get started please take a moment to consider the dangers and take some precautions: Never squirt BBQ starter fluid on a burning BBQ, people do it and end up in casualty. Keep a garden hose or full watering can near the BBQ, if a fire is started you have only moments to control it, not enough time to hook up a hose or fill a bucket Never leave unattended children near a BBQ. No matter how small they are, they can topple a BBQ over. If you have one, keep your Fire Blanket near to hand, if the worst does happen you can wrap a person in it or use it to smother flames. The first job of the year is to clean the BBQ from last year! or If you have access to the Internet, visit our web site at www.btinternet.com/~billericayn.w/site It is packed with very useful information and hot links to other sites. Many thanks to Roy and Sandra Burton for setting up and maintaining the site - all at their own expense.

    CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111

Reporting Crime - would you? You will have seen many and varying reports on the level of 'Reported Crime' across the country. The figures are published by the Home Office and reflect the crime reports the Police have received and of course not the level of real crime, which is probably much higher. Many people take the attitude 'why report it, the Police never seems to catch anyone'. That attitude causes two problems: Police will never be able to catch the criminals if they do not know that a crime has been committed. Police budgets are influenced by the amount of reported crime in the district, so if reported crime is low the Police budget may be suppressed and therefore fewer officers deployed in the area. If you are the victim of a crime or see a crime in progress - do not hesitate to report it.

    Information Wanted

Chelmsford Police are keen to talk to the driver of a white Nissan flatbed van regarding an incident involving an elderly person in the Chelmsford area. The van has the name of a company on the doors in green lettering (may be advertising a gardening company). If you do see the van please call Chelmsford Police on 01245 491212 with the van registration number. Any information you can give may help with inquiries.
