Do you know someone who wants to join Neighbourhood Watch?

If you wish to join your local scheme or start a scheme in your area, please call the NW Liaison Office at the Police Station. We will be pleased to give you the name of the local Co-Ordinator or help you start a new scheme.

Remember: Crime Cannot Flourish in a Community that Cares.

    DOOR SELLERS RETURN

Please be warned the door sellers have returned and a number of you have reported to us one firm in particular who are selling security products at inflated prices and the salesman are somewhat persuasive.

If you do want to purchase security devices and dont know what type, then please speak to the Crime Prevention Officer who is based at Basildon Police Station on 01268 532212 who will gladly assist.

    BASILDON POLICE STATION OPEN DAY

This was a very popular event with an unconfirmed number

of 3,000 people who turned up to have a tour round the station.

The cells seemed to be a particular favourite and who knows maybe the spartan decor will help deter the petty criminals- after all who would want a room without a TV these days!!.

On a more serious note- thank you to all of you who turned up on the day and in particular to Alan Wood for helping with the early morning "rush" at the stands when it felt like 100 people were walking round the exhibits all at the same time.

Finally, and most importantly, thank you to the Basildon Police Division for opening their doors to us public as this must have taken some considerable organising to set up and arrange.

    FIRE BLANKETS AND FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

We purchased a small supply of fire blankets following the advise of the August guest speaker from the Fire Brigade and they have been going like "hot cakes" so if any of you are interested, please contact us while stocks last.

The idea is that you could use the blanket to either put out a small fire or if you are in danger to wrap around yourself to protect you whilst the Fire Brigade are on the way.

We have shopped around and the cheapest we have seen them is £16.99 but we have been able to buy them in bulk and are selling them at a reduced price of just £14.00.

We can also obtain fire extinguishers if enough people are interested which would be of a size of 1.6kg which, according to the advice I have been given, would be really the smallest size worth buying to enable you to put out the average small fire, as the bigger fires you would leave to the professionals from the Fire Brigade.

If we get enough interest then we will negotiate prices with the suppliers as just one fire extinguisher works out expensive but if we buy 10 or more we hope to buy them at around £20-£25 each dependant on numbers.

So if you are interested please let us know.

    OCTOBER MEETING

We will be having a guest speaker from the Dog Unit who will talk about the work that the Unit does and we hope that you can come along.

All NW members are welcome and the meeting will be held at the Football Club as usual.

    PET UPDATE

Just to let you know that the cat who was reported missing in our September newsletter has been found safe and well,

if somewhat scruffy, so theres one happy ending.

We have now been asked by a Brentwood NW member for help in finding her dog Jake.

He has been missing since 28th August and last seen in the South Weald area.

He is a Jack Russell with a long tan coat and was wearing a collar and disc.

If you can help please ring us on 01277 631212 ext 45431.

    Message from the Inspector

"Essex police remains committed to policing Billericay through a dedicated section of local officers based at the High Street Police Station (pictured above) and twenty four hour patrol and emergency cover provided from Basildon. This arrangement allows us maximum flexibility to patrol at "hotspots" identified through analysis.

Although crime has reduced in Billericay over the last few years, the use of mobile phones and greater public awareness means more and more incidents are reported.

We are trying to do more with the same number of staff by working "smarter" and examples of this are telephone help desk, centralised switchboard, simpler prosecution files and greater use of support staff which all help to increase the time we spend on the beat".
