PESTERED BY CALLS?
Picture the scene: you've just sat down to dinner and the phone and
"Pester You Much double glazing?"
Calls annoy you~ there is a way of stopping them without taking
your number out of the Telephone directory
Just phone BT on 0800 398893,
Who will be able to send you a form which will enable you to be
registered with the Telephone Preference Service. This company has
been set up by the tele-sales companies themselves, as it is in their
interest only to phone the people who may be interested in their
products. Once registered your number will be barred from
companies systems. (although this process does take some
time), and eventually you should receive less tele-sales calls.
Whilst this will not stop ~all calls of this nature. it will certainly
help.
UNWANTED CALLS
BT Nuisance Calls Bureau, have a mountain of technology available to stop nuisance callers.
For anybody receiving such calls, here is a some advice:-
- Keep Calm.
- Do not talk to the caller.
- Do not react to the caller at all.
- Place the receiver next to the phone, leaving it off the hook and walk away.
- Some time later, replace the handset, 'without checking to see if the caller is still there.
- If the phone rings again, lift the handset and do not say anything, as a genuine caller will identify themselves.
In general to prevent nuisance calls:
- When answering the phone, do not identify yourself, or say your
number, just say" hello".
- If the caller asks "who is it?" or "what's your number ?" then
reply 'with, "who do you want to speak to?" or "what number are you
trying to call?", then either confirm or say they have the wrong
number.
- Do not give out personal infomation over the phone unless
you are sure you know whom you are talking to. Nuisance callers often
use the disguise of impersonating marketing companies in order to gain
personal information.
To help, BT can:
- Change your number, free of charge.
- Work with the police to track the calls to the phone they are
coming from (thus is much easier than it used to be, and as a result,
more callers are being caught and prosecuted than ever before). If
problems persist, call 150 (freephone) during office hours, or for more
serious cases 0800 661 441 (freephone). You should also phone the
police. BT encourages you to report ALL cases of nuisance calls.
