Libya's National Transitional Council has delayed the burial for Muammar Gaddafi in order to arrange a secret location and allow for an investigation into his death, officials say.

On Friday, as videos continued to surface showing the fugitive deposed leader being captured alive by a crowd of NTC fighters, the United Nations' human rights office called for an investigation into how he died. Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reporting from the location of incident, recounts the moments that lead to his capture.

Libyan authorities are planning a secret burial for ousted leader Col Muammar Gaddafi following his capture and death, the BBC understands. However, it appears there may be a delay in his burial, which under Islamic tradition should take place as soon as possible.

Oil minister Ali Tarhouni told Reuters that Col Gaddafi's body may be kept "for a few days". Nato is expected to declare an end to its Libya campaign in the coming hours. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the death of Col Gaddafi meant Nato's military intervention in Libya had reached its conclusion.

"Clearly the operation is coming to its end," he told reporters.   Earlier, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the Nato operation would end "subject to a few transitory measures in the week to come".

They have said they will conduct a secret burial and there is some speculation that they might even try to bury him at sea, as al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was buried, to prevent any grave being turned into a shrine, she adds

Mr Tarhouni told Reuters that Col Gaddafi's body - currently in Misrata - was not going to be released for burial immediately. "I told them to keep it in the freezer for a few days... to make sure that everybody knows he is dead," he said. Asked about the burial arrangements, he said: "There is no decision yet."

He was discovered hiding a small group of people in a pipe before surrendering.

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of Muammar Gaddafi

October 20, 2011 | Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the following remarks on the death of Muammar Gaddafi:

“The Libyan National Transitional Council has confirmed the death of Muammar Gaddafi.

“Gaddafi’s days are over.

“Never again will he be in a position to support terrorism or to turn guns on his own citizens.

“The Libyan people can finally turn the page on 42 years of vicious oppression, and continue their journey toward a better future.

“At this time, I should like to say how proud we all are of the prominent role played by Canada’s Armed Forces.

“In cooperation with our NATO and Striker Group allies, they upheld the UN mandate to defend innocent Libyans against the regime’s violence.

“I should also like to commend Lieut. General Charles Bouchard of the Royal Canadian Air Force, who led the combined NATO military mission in Libya.

“General Bouchard has served our country with great distinction.

“I have recently spoken with General Bouchard, and our Government shall be speaking with our allies to prepare for the end of our military engagement in the next few days.

“With the shadow of Gaddafi now lifted from their land, it is our hope that the Libyan people will find peace and reconciliation after this dark period in the life of their nation and we look forward to working with them.
