"July 2010" - News Report Pig Bladder "Pixie Dust" Helping Regrow Limbs of Soldiers A powder made from pig bladders is currently being used to help soldiers recover from wounds that would have previously required amputation. Due to the powderīs seemingly magical ability to allow new tissue growth, it picked up the name "pixie dust." Pig bladders are used because they contain "extra cellular matrix," a substance made of mostly collagen. The powder has been used to grow human bladders, but has also helped several soldiers with severe arm and leg injuries. Plastic surgeon Steve Wolf, who is heading up the pig bladder powder trials in Texas, said" "We donīt quite know how it works which adds to its magical qualities. We think that it attracts cells in the body that have the ability to multiply." Wal-Mart Offers iPhone for $97Since Appleīs 16 GB 3GS iPhone will soon be outdated because of a new model which comes out soon, Apple is working with worldīs largest retailer Wal-Mart. From Tuesday on, Wal-Mart will reportedly sell the phone for $97. It comes with a two-year contract from AT&T. "Itīs our commitment to always lead on price," Wal-Martīs senior category director for wireless claims. Last quarter, Apple sold about 8.3 million iPhones. First Man to Be Infected by Computer Virus Mark Gasson, a University of Reading researcher, has become the first known human to be infected by a computer virus. The self-inflicted infection was done so under a controlled experiment to see how RFID chips can host and spread computer viruses. Research has shown that as implantable bionic devices like pacemakers advance in technology, they open themselves up to security and safety issues. "We should start to think of these devices as miniature computers," explained Gasson. Surgically implanted hardware may one day not only help those with medical needs, but for those wanting enhancements. Gasson warns that we should always exercise caution and keep up with computer hygiene, protection, and awareness. iPad on Sale in Europe and Asia - Long Lines and Eager Buyers On Friday Appleīs new tablet computer, the iPad, went on sale in Europe and Asia and caused long lines in the shops in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Tokyo. In Frankfurt hundreds of buyers already came at 3 a.m. to snatch one of the popular devices. "If I was a music fan, it would be the launch of a Lady GaGa album in the U.S.," comedian Stephen Fry said about the launch of Appleīs newest product. In the United States already, a million units have been sold in only 28 days. After workers at a Chinese factory that produces iPads committed suicide, concerns about working conditions were raised. In a statement, Apple however, responded that the conditions for workers are safe and that they are treated with respect. AMDFusion APU Processor UnveiledAt this years AMD 2010 Computex Press Conference, AMD finally unveiled their new processor, or to be more technical; their new APU. CPU and GPU all in one die for simplicity, energy efficiency and faster access to board hardware. In the video at the source, there is the blonde who speaks about what AMD has accomplished, the direction that media is heading today and how AMD hopes to help the consumers in that department. As well as software and hardware developers. At 58 minutes into the video, a demo of Alien vs Predators is shown in all its DX11 glory on a low energy chip that would basically be in a net book. US Navy Successfully Shoots Down Aircraft With Laser WeaponThe US Navy has successfully destroyed a number of unmanned drones using the Laser Weapon System. (LaWS) It is reportedly the first "detect-thru-engage" shoot-down of a simulated threat target in a combat-like scenario over water. The weapon can replace the 20mm cannon normally mounted on Phalanx (or R2D2 as it is affectionately known) and has the advantage of vaporising the target rather than raining shrapnel and sometimes unexploded shells on the impact zone. "Further development and integration of increasingly more powerful lasers into Surface Navy LaWS will increase both the engagement range and target sets that can be successfully engaged and destroyed," said Naval spokesperson Captain David Kiel. George Washington Gets Machine-Washed in Zimbabwe The Zimbabwe coalition government last year made the U.S. dollar legal tender in the inflation-plagued African nation. The local currency is suffering "billions of percent" of inflation since the economy collapsed The money gets so dirty that US currency is machine-washed and hung up to dry with the sheets. In Harareīs high crime areas, the bills are stashed in shoes and briefs for safety. The odor and dirt makes hand washing or laundromats justifiable. The ones and fives remain in circulation until they disintegrate at the rural markets and bars, not the way the U.S. Treasury planned it. Stateside dollars remain in use for about 20 months. |

"November 2009" - News Report 10,000 Windows Live Passwords LeakedApproximately 10,000 Windows Live/Hotmail login credentials, including user names and passwords, have been leaked to the Internet. Upon learning of the leak, Microsoft "launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers". A total of 10,028 login details were posted online and are likely only a small portion of a much larger group of compromised email accounts, since the leaked details only cover usernames starting with letters A-B in the alphabet. The leak accompanies a rumor that all 450,000,000 Windows Live email accounts had been compromised, a rumor that is highly improbable. However, it is strongly suggested that anyone with a Windows Live account change their password immediately. Microsoft to Add Competitors' Browsers to Windows Microsoft has ended a squabble with the European Commission by agreeing to add a default option to download competitors' browsers to its next Windows operating system, Windows 7. Previously, Internet Explorer was added exclusively to the system. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said: "We also welcome the opportunity to take the next step in the process regarding our proposal to promote interoperability with a broad range of our products." Microsoft had initially said it would ship Windows in Europe without any kind of browser whatsoever. Creation of Low-Power FM Stations Supported by Republicans, Democrats A bipartisan group of representatives expressed its support for HR 1147, a bill that would clear the way for Low Power FM (LPFM) radio stations to join their high-powered colleagues on the airwaves. LPFM is expected to be intensely local in focus. "This legislation will bring communities across the country access to their airwaves," said Rep. Mike Doyle, D.-Pa. Added Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., "I am a big fan of low power FM; it empowers people who need a voice." The bill has passed subcommittee. The bill would ease restrictions on LPFM stations, which are currently required to operate no closer than the third-next channel from the nearest high-power station on the dial. Now, Doyle says, "The time has come to bring low power to the people." Wave-Powered Desalination Plant Planned Texas: Renew Blue Inc. has announced plans to build a desalination plant on an ocean platform powered by 18 wave pumps. The plant will have a capacity of approximately 3,000 gallons per day. The water will be sold as bottled water. The bottles used by the company will be made out of corn-based plastic so they will break down. Vice president of parent company Independent Natural Resources Inc. told local media that they are attempting address the need for greener power and more drinking water. Is AdBlock for Firefox Stealing or User's Right? Firefox has gained a lot of popularity among the Internet community because of many useful extensions. One of them is called AdBlock, essential to anyone browsing the Internet today who wishes to remove all the intrusive and flashy ads. Is is stealing potential revenue from a website when you block their ads? Or is it a user right to do so? One popular filehost site 'MediaFire' seems to disagree. A Firefox add-on has forced this company to give Mozilla a takedown notice. Obviously this had no legal leg as the end-user has the final say in what appears on their computer. There have been threats from some website owners to target Firefox users and block them. However, this has yet to be followed through by anyone. Pedal-Powered Notebooks Deployed by OLPC in Afghanistan Afghanistan - OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) recently began experimenting with pedal-powered laptops in order to be able to provide computer access to areas where power is an issue. Previously, the solution adopted was a hand crank. OLPC took the original hand-crank-powered laptop and connected it to the feet, a solution which could be easier to provide power. A video which shows the prototype is available at the source. Russia Planning a Nuclear-Powered Spaceship? Head of the Russian Space Agency Anatoly Perminov has announced plans to build a spaceship powered by a megawatt-class nuclear reactor. He says that the basic design could be complete by 2012 with the ship to be built by 2021. President Dmitry Medvedev has thrown his weight behind what he calls "a very serious project" and called on the Cabinet to find the money to back it. Nuclear power has been used for spy satellites in the past on a much smaller scale While a specific use for the proposed space vehicle wasn't mentioned it is known that Russia is looking to replace the aging Soyuz rockets for orbital missions and is considering the possibility of going to the moon and Mars at some stage. MS - Accepting Vista as a Failure? Sales of Windows 7, the newest offering in the Microsoft line, are 234% higher in the same period in their release than Windows Vista was. Profitability for the product, however, is only 82 percent higher. Microsoft has been pushing Windows 7 Home, with its lowest price point, as the successor to Vista, considered by many to be less than successful. Microsoft's goal is to have Windows 7 do what Vista failed to do: replace its aging Windows XP. XBox Ban Means Buying A New Console, But Are The Hackers Ready To Counter It? Microsoft recently banned thousands more 'modified' XBox consoles. It's estimated around a million units are now banned. Microsoft defended their stance on piracy and modified consoles by saying there is "no recourse for terms of use violations". Anyone with a modified console needs a new one to connect to the Live service. Modifying a console can include adding new chips to it or using software hacks. Microsoft isn't commenting on how their detection works. Rumour has it that there will soon be a new mod to get around the newest MS roadblock. Some users defend using modified consoles by saying discs are too fragile and you should be allowed a backup. All Live accounts will still be fine to use. Hacker Rickrolls the iPhone The Apple iPhone has been hit by its first malicious worm, a self-propogating program called ikee. The worm shows itself by changing the infected phone's wallpaper to a photo of Rick Astley and the message "ikee is never going to give you up". The worm is even able to infect "jail-broken" iPhones, those which have been cracked to remove Apple's protection mechanisms. The worm was written by Australian Ashley Towns, who also published the source code online. One security analyst said that the release of the source code "means that there will quickly be more variants, and they might have nastier payload than just changing your wallpaper." Google is Your Friend A Google search led a daughter to her father. After thirty years of Scott trying to find his missing daughter, she instead finds him by typing "Scott Robert Becker Looking for April" into the popular search engine. Scott was quoted as saying "I could not find her. I could not find her mother. I couldn't find April and I looked and I looked and I looked. So, I thought maybe one day my daughter will Google her name and maybe she will find me that way. The man from Wichita, Kansas, was finally reunited with his long-lost daughter at an Atlanta restaurant last week. Carbon Rations Could Be On The Horizen For Britain Britain is obligated to cut it's emissions by 80% of what it was in 1990 by 2050 under the Climate Change Act. Lord Smith of Finsbury believes the most effective way of reaching this goal is individual carbon allowances, or "carbon credits." Anything people used such as fuel, airline tickets, or electricity would be attributed to their unique carbon number. A statement will be sent every month to keep track, and if their "carbon account" hits 0, they'd have to pay to get more credits. A spokesman of the Environmental Agency said the only ones affected by this would be those with "extravagant lifestyles." Ruth Lea, an economist, says, "you begin to wonder whether this is what the green agenda has always been about. It's Orwellian." |
