Action Half-Life is the supposed 'game that plays like a film'. It has everything action films have; guns, special moves and some nice animations and scripted moments. Yet, is having a game that plays like a film a good thing?

The game sounds good on paper, but it all comes down to how it plays, and sadly, in this one, it isn't all that brilliant. The special moves system, a wide range of guns and even kung fu makes it sound great in theory, but sadly it isn't executed well enough. Even though there is a wide range of guns, in team games only the akimbo guns seem to get used. The special move system, similar to the diving in The Specialists, doesn't work that great, and you can find yourself lying on the floor for a while tapping furiously at keys in an attempt to get back up.

Now in its full version though, the game seems rather polished, and there aren't any noticeable bugs. There are many maps in the game as well, and most are of a decent quality, many with nicely scripted parts to them. They also include parts from films, such as the ability to dive out of windows, and many secret passageways. Unfortunately, the team play in these maps is near non-existent and team games can become a chore. What's more, the lack of community means there aren't many dedicated servers or clans for this, which is a shame.

Luckily though, there is one element which saves this game from near disaster. The vanilla death match. Not usually a favourite in games, yet one done properly it is hugely enjoyable. In this game, you start off with a handgun, some knives and of course the ability to pull of kung-

fu. Around the maps are dotted ammo, bigger guns and other items. The battle then commences to get to these guns and kill as many people as you can with them. Unlike the team game, this doesn't sound too great on paper, yet it plays magnificently. The designs of the maps aid this to provide an enjoyable gaming experience.

Overall, the team game was quite a let down for me and lacks the style of TS 2. Yet the death match more than makes up for this so it's a hard one to put a final score on. The maps are very well designed and even though the special moves don't play very well, they look the part. Lack of community is quite a shame though, as a few clans for this could make the game very good indeed.

Second Oppinions:

When we first started playing Action Half-Life I thought to myself, "Dean, why are you making yourself play this pile of excriment?' Then we stopped playing the teamgame and started on the deathmatch... It was fun for about 20 minutes, then it just becomes distinctly average. It sports an average stunt system, average weapons and average gameplay. This is certainly no match for TS2 and I felt somewhat disappointed with this mod.

I was quite looking forward to playing this as I had heard some good things about it, unfortunately they weren't all true. It didn't play very well in my oppinion and overall, it wasn't as good as I first thought.
