Below is a selection of the activities available in the Borough of Torfaen. Many of these hold special events throughout the year, therefore, the visitor is advised to view the Notice Board regularly.

Big Pit Tel: 01495790311  

"Big Pit", now the National Mining Museum of Wales, provides the visitor with the unique opportunity to tour a real coal mine. Provided with safety helmet and cap light you will be taken on a tour of the underground workings by ex miners. On the surface can be viewed the winding engine-house, pithead baths and blacksmiths workshop. Please contact the Tourist Information Centre regarding age and height restrictions.

The Ironworks Museum is situated only a short distance from "Big Pit", both of which form an integral part of the World Heritage Site. Built in the latter part of the 18 century the works was at that time on the cutting edge of technology. Large scale models of the ironworks as it was in 1863 and of the industrial landscape enhances the interpretation of the site. Follow the Ironworks link for further information.


Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway Co. Tel: 01495792263  

The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway was initiated in 1981and it now operates part of the railway that once ran from Pontypool to Brynmawr. Under normal operating conditions ticket holders have unlimited travel and can break their journeys as often as they wish. Casual visitors and experts are well catered for. Look out for special events such as Thomas The Tank and Friends also Christmas Specials - make sure that you visit the Notice Board regularly.


 

For a real family day out there can be no better venue than Green Meadow Community Farm at Cwmbran. Children are encouraged to feed and touch selected animals. See traditional farm animals and rare Welsh breeds. Along the way look for a variety of wildlife and seasonal flowers. Exhausted after all the fun? then why not visit the Farmhouse Cafe? Regular events are held throughout the year and there are facilities for meetings, conferences and parties.

Llanyrafon Mill Tel: 01633482780  

Llanyrafon Mill was part of the Manor of Edlogan which was owned by the Griffith family from the 1600's until 1880. Since then there have been many different owners and millers until production ceased in 1951. Documentary evidence states that there was a mill here in 1632. Technically, Llanyrafon Mill should be termed "mills"as it has three sets of grinding stones. The "Friends" of Llanyrafon Mill was formed in 1995 and the aim is to restore the mill to a working facility.

The Griffithstown Railway Museum is home to a superb collection of railwayana from local stations. The museum is sited in a former goods shed of the Great Western Railway and even includes a complete stationmasters office. The museum is aptly situated in the village of Griffithstown - for the village is named after Henry Griffiths, the first GWR stationmaster at nearby Pontypool Road. It was also the birthplace of ASLEF. After your visit treat yourself to a "proper mug of tea" in the authentic cafe. This museum is a paradise for lovers of the steam age.

The Valley Inheritance Museum is situated in part of Park House, Pontypool. This was once the residence of the Hanbury family, ironmasters in the valley for many years. Based in the old stable block the museum, by means of exhibitions and audiovisual presentations, depicts the industrial history of the valley. Guest exhibitions and events are held regularly. The museum, which also has a coffee shop, is open from February to December.
