The Beginning

AvonPrior to the events in The Way Back Avon trained with Tynus and they later worked on a fraud together. Avon was arrested, but did not implicate Tynus and was presumably acquitted. Later he conceived the idea of embezzling a large sum of money by undermining confidence in the Federation's banking system. In Space Fall Vila mentions a sum of five million credits. The plan was discovered by Federation security and was thought to have political motivations.  Bartholomew, alias Anna Grant, was assigned to 'run him in'. According to Shrinker, anyone Avon so much as looked at was 'marked for collection'.

Traveling 'halfway across the city' to buy exit visas, Avon was shot when the seller increased the price to ten times the original amount and could apparently have got even more for turning Avon in. Avon killed the man but had lost a lot of blood and was forced to lie low. He was sheltered by some people, during which time he heard that Anna had been arrested. He waited for a week until leaving, having heard by then that Anna was dead. At some point after Anna's 'death', and probably after his arrest, Del Grant threatened to kill him if they ever met again.

Like Blake, Avon was sentenced to transportation to Cygnus Alpha. Once aboard the prison ship London he planned to arrange a deal with the crew whereby he would be set free and the rest of the prisoners dumped in space. He quickly deduced that they would then have to kill him to keep his mouth shut. Avon boarded the Liberator with Blake and secured their escape.

The Character

AvonAvon was the most intellectual of the crew and the most knowledgeable, particularly about electronics, making him a very useful person. He was however, dangerously double-edged, supercilious and fastidious in manner, caring little for the opinion of others. He was also ruthlessly selfish, this being something he was quite candid about, "I look upon self-interest as my great strength" (Dawn of the Gods).

Avon appeared to have his own code of conduct which included a certain sense of honour, "I'm a man of my word. In the end, that's all there is really" (Rumours of Death), but expediency reigned supreme, "I have no objection to shooting Travis in the back" (The Keeper).

Avon could be said to function as Blake's doppel-ganger, which enabled him to display the dark and negative aspects denied to a popular hero. His nature was devious and ambivalent, he could be sullen, carping and malicious. His relationship with Blake was complex. He did not occupy the traditional position of second-in-command since he refused to owe Blake allegiance. Blake acknowledged this in his remark to Cally, "If he stays, it must be for his own reasons" Avon in action(Breakdown), and generally knew better than to demand unthinking obedience from him. Avon's own reasons for joining Blake in his desperate attempt on Federation Control Centre were, as he candidly admitted, that if it was successful, Blake would have to stay on Earth as leader and coordinator of the opposition forces, leaving Liberator to him. This detachment counterbalanced Blake's authority with the others, sometimes causing them to think more carefully about their own position.

Despite the apparent low regard which he held for the rest of the crew Avon was somehow unable either, to sever the connection, or let others perish as a result of his own ignorance or carelessness.

The End

Avon surrounded by troopersAvon stayed with the Liberator until its destruction at Terminal and then with Scorpio until its final flight to Gauda Prime (Blake) where they met up with Blake.  Shortly after their meeting the crew were ambushed by Federation troops, Avon assumed deception and shoots Blake. He was last seen standing over Blake's body, surrounded by at least twelve troopers. Then a number of shots were heard to be fired.
