The Beginning
Prior to the events in The Way Back Gan was married and lived a quiet life on the planet
Zephron. When his wife was raped and killed by a Federation security guard he 'took the armed security guard apart with his bare hands'. He was arrested, found guilty of murder, and
sentenced to be deported to Cygnus Alpha. Sometime before boarding the prison ship London Gan was fitted with a limiter implant which would prevent him from killing again.
Gan was first seen in Space Fall unstrapping himself from his seat after the London left Earth.
He helped Vila in his attempts to distract the guards, while Blake gained access to the ship's service tunnels, and persuaded the guard to open the exit door from the prisoners' quarters.
Later he escaped from Cygnus Alpha when he teleported aboard the Liberator with Vila and Vargas.
The Character
Gan was naturally honest, good-mannered and well-spoken. Although his immense physique
made him useful in a fight he was normally gentle and protective, he was often seen wielding a medical kit. His reputation for slowness and limited intellect was partially substantiated from a
sarcastic remark by Avon in The Web and his own self-confessed difficulty in mastering the teleport controls in Horizon.
Gan became a useful member of the crew after Jenna's training. He also made efforts at self
-improvement and could be seen using Orac as a learning machine.
Gan was usually a firm and comforting support to Blake, 'Another one who's willing to let Blake do his thinking for him' - Avon, but not totally uncritical. He was dismayed at Blake's proposal to
use the Terra Nostra crime syndicate for his own ends and protested strongly 'Think what it is they control; everything dirty, degrading and cruel on just about every colonized world.'. Gan
was also the most tolerant of Vila out of the rest of the crew, but still found him irritating at times.
Gan was generally well-liked by the rest of the crew, he was difficult to quarrel with, even Avon didn't often sharpen his tongue on him.
The End
The Liberator returned to Earth (Pressure Point) and Blake planned to capture Federation Control in the belief that it would cripple the Federation. On the surface
Blake and Gan gained access to the bunker where Control was supposedly housed but it was a Federation trap. They are confronted by Travis where they
discover Control had been moved thirty years ago. As they attempt to escape Travis used a grenade which brought down half the roof. Gan held open a closing
door in order for the others to escape but his leg got trapped and he was caught under the collapsing doorway. Blake rushed back to Gan but he died in his hands.
