The Beginning

Jenna in holding cellJennaJenna first meets Blake in the holding cell awaiting transportation to Cygnus Alpha. She described herself as being a 'free-trader' which Vila interpreted as meaning a smuggler. Vila was in fact correct in his assessment, but Jenna was much more than a smuggler, she was one of the most successful smugglers in Federation history which naturally attracted unwelcome interest from the Federation.

Her previous career had accustomed her to a hard and dangerous way of life and criminal contacts from her past surfaced from time to time. In Bounty she was reunited with the Amagon pirate Tarvin, with whom she had hid from 300 customs guards in the mountains on Zolat-4. In Shadow she revealed that she had previously dealt with Largo (whom she denied was her "friend"), and that she had refused to run a consignment of shadow from Callisto to Earth once she found out what it was. She was arrested soon after, and later suspected Largo of having a hand in this. It may well have been this arrest that led to her being shipped to Cygnus Alpha.

She was put aboard the drifting Liberator with Blake and Avon and was instrumental in their escape when she was able to pilot the ship away.

The Character

JennaFrom her first appearance in The Way Back Jenna seemed self-assured, tough and unsympathetic. She soon made Vila return the watch he had stolen from Blake and from then on she softened to Blake's predicament and becomes his main ally. Her nature was pragmatic and skeptical and although she was fond of Blake she could view him objectively, thus in Star One, she asked Avon to watch out for him as he was not giving himself enough time to think. She was also an independent person and it was she who spotted the Andromedan invasion fleet and took the decision to alert Servalan, whose instant mobilisation saved the day.

Blake and Jenna demonstrated affection freely. She embraced him on his safe return from the first teleport trial and they frequently touched, usually an arm round the shoulders. Not a virginal lady, she had had lovers before (Tarvin) and could be intimate with Blake, although she sometimes manifested reservations about him (Pressure Point, Trial).

As a skilled pilot, Jenna was crucial to Blake's escape plans and it was she who performed the vital function of training the inexperienced crew to operate the Liberator, several training sessions feature in the early episodes. This prestige as the pilot gave authority to her relationships with the others. Vila held her in considerable respect, he was not entirely joking when he told Blake "It's an honour to be locked up with her". It was to Jenna that Gan confided his story (Time Squad) and he made great efforts to learn to handle Liberator under her tuition.  Her relationship with Cally was amicable, although she did not share the latter's taste for seeking out dangerous missions (Weapon). Her attitude to Avon was more complex. As Blake's chief ally, she had good reason to mistrust him. No sooner have they salvaged Liberator, than he was tempting her to abandon Blake on Cygnus Alpha and share the loot with him. He seldom missed an opportunity to sow doubts about Blake, which were sometimes hard to counter (Trial). Yet quite often they seemed to have a good understanding between them, sharing a detention cell in Space World, they sat in close contact. Avon probably appealed to her more cynical and lawless side.

The End

Jenna left the rest of the crew when the Liberator had to be abandoned in the closing stages of the intergalactic war. She left with Blake but soon became seperated from him. On Sarran, Zen told Avon she was on a hospital ship with superficial injuries, and in Powerplay, Zen stated that Jenna was injured whilst in her life capsule and was now en route to Morphenniel on a neutral cargo ship.

Jenna was last mentioned by Blake on Gauda Prime, where he described her to Tarrant as a 'young smuggler, actually', who had taught him how to use a random flight program. He further explained that she had died running the blockade around the planet, and hit the self-destruct, taking 'half a squadron of gunships with her'.
