Orac was the most sophisticated artifical intelligence in the universe. It had an amazing array of technical abilities but it also had some problems.

Other equipment includes :-

 Hand Held Weaponary
Teleport & Comms Devices
Clothing

Orac

Orac was described by its creator, Ensor, as being beyond a simple computer but rather being a brain, a genius.

Orac

This may have been just the vanity of Ensor but either way this was easily the most sophisticated artifical intelligence in the universe.

In his youth Ensor invented the 'Tarial Cell' and it was this component which formed the basis of Orac years later. Orac was built to gather information from other computers which incorparate the 'Tarial Cell' process the findings and make predictions. It was also capable of using it's carrier waves to operate or interfere with other computers and equipment such as teleport and weapon systems.

Technical Abilities

Predictive ability

Drawing information from other computers Orac could make predictions. In Orac it predicted the Liberator's destruction at astro point 781.

Able to take control of other computer systems and interfere with them

In Redemption when 'The System' attempted to reclaim the Liberator the sister ship, DSV-1, pursued Liberator but Orac was able to scramble the missile launch systems using carrier waves. Orac also tookover the computers of 'The System' and used this ability to destroy DSV-1. In Dawn of The Gods Orac assumed control of Zen to study a black hole into which it supposed the ship had been pulled In Aftermath Orac assumed control of Avon's life capsule as it entered the atmosphere of Sarran too fast.

Capacity to operate other equipment

Orac operated the teleport in Shadow, it's signals also passed through the same dimension as Cally's telepathy, though Orac itself was not telepathic.

Could deliver an electical discharge to objects in close proximity

Happened to Hanna in Shadow.

Could reduce physical size

Gambit saw Orac reduce itself, using stabilized atomic implosion, to one eighth normal size for two hours and six minutes. It was implied that the length of time it could reduce itself for was inversely proportional to the degree of reduction.

Carrier beam facility

Jenna used Orac's carrier beam to warn Space Command of the impending alien invasion in Star One. This was reportedly the fastest way to contact Servalan.

Ablity to analyse objects

When a sensory device was attached to Orac in Sarcophagus it was able to study the alien artefact brought back to the ship by Cally.

Transmission interception and modification

In Ultraworld Orac reflected the Core's wave emissions back to the Core destabilising it.

Delegation of orders

Orac was able to delegate orders given by Avon to other computers, Traitor.

Simulation of transmission signals

The episode Blake saw Orac simulate two signals on Gauda Prime. The first was a distress beacon to attract passing bounty hunters and to allow Avon to acquire their transport. The second was to imitate one of Blake's fliers and allow the crew to enter a landing silo in Blake's headquarters.

Technical Problems

Could be taken over in certain situations

This occurred in Shadow where it was taken over by the Darkness and then again in Headhunter where in came under the influence of Mullers android.

Susceptible to electrical interference

This occurred above Virn

Easily damaged by explosions and direct impacts

Explosions were arranged by Servalan in Rescue and direct impacts occurred in Warlord when it was hit by a girder brought down by explosives planted by Finn.

Personality

Vila and Dayna tackle OracAlthough a technological marvel Orac proved to be a handful for Blake and his crew.  The machine had absorbed the irritable characteristics of Ensor, it's creator , especially his vanity. It had a snappy voice and was often impatient with anyone unfortunate enough to ask it a question. It also showed little concern for the rest of the crew who it regarded with scorn. In short, Orac would much rather spend time contemplating the mysteries of the universe than spending time with mere mortals.

Orac was voiced by Peter Tuddenham.

First Contact

Blake meets EnsorOrac was first encountered in the episode aptly titled Orac. Servalan had learnt the location of Orac and was willing to pay 100 million credits for it, telling Travis it was worth "ten times that much". Blake and his crew embark on a life-saving misson to Aristo to prevent the machine from falling into Federation hands. Servalan and Travis race to seize the prize only to be beaten at the last moment by Blake who captures it for himself and, more importantly, keeps it out of Federation hands.

The End

Orac in Blake's flierThe last time Orac was seen was in the final episode, Blake. It was in the flier acquired by the crew as they made their way to Blake's headquarters. The crew were next seen in the tracking gallery of this installation and Orac was not with them.
