
Midland Societies for the Blind is a fundraising office
providing income for its nine member societies mainly by means of
payroll giving. Midland Societies for the Blind have been involved in
this form of fund raising for around seventy years, through their
close association with local authorities, universities, industrial
companies and single donors.
The member societies which make up Midland Societies for the Blind
are:
- Brib - Birmingham Royal Institution for the Blind. Brib
was established in 1846 to enable people who are blind or
partially sighted to lead their lives to the maximum potential.
Brib comprises of Queen Alexandra College, providing
education and training for visually impaired people wishing to
take courses in further education and for vocational assessment,
and Birmingham Focus, providing services in the community,
including advice and information, special needs and holiday grants
to unemployed registered blind people, courses and activities
including braille, mobility, living skills, languages and
counselling, low vision assessment and training, social/activity
group for visually impaired Asians.
- Coventry Society for the Blind. The two main aspects of
the society's work are to provide residential care for up to 16
elderly visually impaired people and run a purpose built, fully
staffed and equipped resource centre. In addition, the Society
works closely with Coventry Social Services Department, Health
Authority and Voluntary Services Council as well as local,
regional and national organisations of and for the blind.
- Shropshire Voluntary Association for the Blind acts as
the focus for fundraising and for voluntary work for the visually
impaired in Shropshire.
- Staffordshire Association for the Welfare of the Blind
- Stourbridge Institution for the Blind
- Walsall Society for the Blind carries out its
activities throughout the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall.
- Warwickshire Association for the Blind acts as an agent
for the local authority Social Services Department in respect of
registration, social work support, rehabilitation and provision of
equipment for daily living.
- Worcestershire Association for the Blind. The aim of
the Association is to promote the well being and happiness of
visually impaired people living in Worcestershire.
