Race Report from Coffee Pot 50 TT 23/7/06  - Report by Ian Adams

As the rest of Britain woke up to another day of sunshine three riders from Ythan were treated to the thickest fog that Altens industrial estate could muster.  Pea soup like conditions meant a half hour delay to the start as we could not actually see the first roundabout we were meant to turn at.  Conditions rapidly improved and after standing chatting in a layby for a while we were off.  Traffic conditions were pretty light so negotiating the roundabouts in Portlethen was not too tricky, on the brae back to the Bridge of Dee however last minute evasive action was needed to avoid the dead deer at the side of the road!

A brisk breeze greeted the riders on the turn onto the south Deeside road and the roadside encouragement from Russ Craig was most welcome (rumours that he had left his baby daughter in the bushes near the turn proved unfounded).

The mid section of the course to the second dead turn was running quick due to the stiff westerly breeze and made the run back into Durris bridge tough on already tired legs.

On the final stretch to the line almost everyone was caught out by the never ending stretch of road from the Milltimber bridge to the line which must be ‘just around the corner.’

The event overall was won by Jonathan Copp in 1:50.42 a full 3.22 over second placed Ian Black of Sandy Wallace cycles.  Carlos Riise had the unfortunate luck to travel all the way from Shetland only to puncture on the course.

Dave Carnegie slotted home in a respectable 2:23.32 in his first ever 50 finishing well inside his 2:30 target.  Caroline Runcie posted a 2:30.26 scooping the first lady prize from under the nose of Ellen ‘Bike by Nasa’ Thornell.  I managed to improve significantly over my previous PB and finished in 2:13:01 capturing the first Handicap prize in the process.  All in all a successful mornings racing for Ythan.
