20.05.2006 North of Scotland 10 mile TT Championship - Elgin  

Race Report from Andy Duncan

Only 3 Ythan riders took to the start at Elgin for this 10 mile time trial.

Bill Dallas and Russ Craig were competing in the Dundee Thistle Road Race and Carol Middleton had dusted off her trainers and entered the Longside 10k. There was a blank space on the start list which we naturally assumed would be filled by Steve Argo (as is the rules). However Steve didn’t show and we can only assume he entered so late that he will riding the course a week next Thursday.  

Caroline Runcie was making her first appearance of the season. She had gone for it in a big way, having entered the 10 mile TT, hilly 18 and 2-up over the weekend, KEEN! Caroline was first away for Ythan and clocked a 30.04 which was by no means a disaster on this course. The tail wind which was expected on the home leg never materialised and most people seemed to fade a little in the last stretch of road.  

Andy Duncan was away next and set a steady pace with Sean Monaghan breathing down his neck. Sean was soon breathing down someone else’s neck as he romped past Andy before the turn! Andy suffered similar fading on the last stretch on this strangely ‘draggy’ course and finished with a 26.44.  

Fiona Duncan was last to go, almost literally as only the awesome Carlos Riise was starting after her. Fiona was soon on a solo mission as Carlos swept past, Fiona narrowly missing him with the contents of her nose as he did so. (She’s been ill, I suppose Carlos would forgive her) Fiona is still getting used to her new super lo-pro position on her bike and recovering from various ailments, so she was reasonably satisfied with her 28.46.  

It was a good event on a course which isn’t particularly fast as shown by Carlos Riise’s winning time of 21.57, extremely fast but not as fast as we know he can go. Caroline and Fiona will certainly get much faster as the weeks pass and will start to take some firsts in the races to come, watch out Carol (bin those gutties and get back on yer bike).
