Bob Souter Memorial,10 Mile Time Trial at
Garlogie on 2 April 2006
Race Report from Andy Duncan
Eight Ythan riders took to the start line for the Bob Souter Memorial 10
miler at Garlogie on a raw day with a stiff breeze facing them on the outward
leg.
Steve Argo had been out with his airfix model paints to ensure his frame matches
his new skinsuit. He looked the part and backed it up with a very strong 24.41.
The comeback 'kid' Charlie Allan had the Commissar scrambling for the rule book,
checking to see if bionic knees are legal under SCU regulations. Turned out they
are and Charlie posted a remarkable 32.50. (only 8 minutes quicker than his last
visit to Garlogie!)
Ian Adams was next up and despite looking a bit like Princess Anne with that
headscarf affair on his head (I'm sure he has a perfectly good Ythan cc cap!) he
rode a solid 28.01.
Fiona Duncan was looking the part on her new (to her) time trial bike. She kept
saying she was looking to get 'aero' and I think she must have stopped at the
shop at Echt to buy one as she trundled in with a 29.54. First race of the
season blues for Fiona but she will certainly get quicker as the summer comes
round.
Carol Middleton was on a mission today after her disappointment at the previous
10 at Garlogie. She started slow but fairly picked up the pace on the second leg
to notch up a 30.24. If Carol continues with this level of improvement, she will
finish races before she starts them by the end of the season!
Andy Duncan started next and took an age to get up to speed on the outward leg.
He posted a 27.41 which he was a little disappointed with. After the race he
said that he was looking to try different kinds of cycling, to become more of an
'all-rounder'. His fellow Ythan riders all looked at his belly and suggested he
was already rounder than most of them.
Dave 'the heat' Harrison was next off and managed a 29.11, not bad for a man of
his advancing years riding an adapted guitar first used by Noddy Holder in the
70's.
Finally Russ 'lightning' Craig was away and romped to a 24.48. He narrowly
missed winning the Bob Souter trophy (1st on Handicap) and probably would have
ridden even faster if he hadn't expended unnecessary energy the night before,
polishing his frame.
