London and North Western Railway
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) was formed in 1846 by the merging of the London and Birmingham Railway, the Grand Junction Railway and the Manchester And Birmingham Railway.
It was known as the "Premier Line" because it contained the former line of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the world's first passenger railway. It served the country's largest cities, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. It also handled the Irish Mail for the Government between London Euston and Holyhead in Wales.
The LNWR ceased to exist when it was amalgamated with other railway companies in the "groupings" of 1923 to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.
