New
initiative launched by District 1060 Youth Activities
A Rotary programme that
can be used by any Rotary Club, any District or a combination of Clubs and
Districts to benefit many different young people from Youth Groups and Clubs to
Scouts and Guides to Young Carers and Overseas Achievers, such as the District
1060 International Youth Exchange Rotary Youth Leadership Award programme for
Achievers from Europe or the programme for Achievers from the UK. Organised and
run by Rotarians for Rotarians
An initiative for Rotary Clubs to advantage themselves of a unique facility for
young people whilst at the same time supporting a local Charity through hiring
“Dream Catcher”, either for a day trip or overnight (minimum 36 hours) or even
the whole week like the District 1060 "Camps and Tours" RYLA. A
programme qualifying for RYLA status from the RI
The Narrow Boat " Dream Catcher" is a £100,000 purpose built 70ft narrow boat
weighing in at a cool 20 tons. Fully fitted with all modern amenities, the
galley includes: fridges, washing machine and micro-wave. There are four wash
basins, three showers, three toilets and all the usual facilities associated
with a craft of this quality, even facilities for computers and electrical
appliances to be used
The boat will be skippered by one or two professional volunteer helmsmen (often
a Rotarian) who all have the National Community Boats Association qualifications
for working with either the young, the elderly, the disadvantaged or handicapped
and your own youth leader, teacher, carer or Rotary Member will be aboard to
make sure all goes according to plan. The boat will accommodate 12 plus the
helmsman
To enhance this unique experience the young people will learn about the history
of the Inland waterways canal system in the UK and have the opportunity to see
and operate the locks during their trip. They will also meet many people
including overseas visitors on the canals, study the wildlife and the
Warwickshire Countryside and have a great experience at very little cost. The
excitement generated by an overnight experience on a Narrow Boat can be
character building especially if this is the first time away from home
