How it all began

How the Book Began:

The idea for the book first came to me when I was recovering from an eating disorder, and wrote vast amounts of poetry, during sleepless nights. One of the rooms in the hospital had a selection of poems framed on the walls and when reading them I was overcome with an immense sense of déjà-vu, it was as if I had written them, they were the same thought, feelings, and emotions I had been struggling with and expressed myself.

This was combined with a sense of reassurance that these people had also faced the same battle in the same room, but ultimately recovered and moved on. It occurred to me that it would be an amazing thing to publish a book of poems that sufferers and their families could read.

The Authors:

The poems came from a range of authors from all sections of the community. Letters were sent out to many hospitals with eating disorders units, self-help groups, and a request for poems and biographies was put in the Eating Disorders Association magazine. Some of the poems were written for the book, but most were works that had been written in private.

This anthology is certainly unique in the way it presents a ‘community’ of sufferers, furthermore since sufferers of eating disorders become so isolated, the book enables them to say to the world ‘this is what we suffer with, this is the daily struggle we face…'

The Aims of the Book:

The book is intended to provide support and raise awareness about eating disorders. The book has been printed independently with donations from various businesses and charities, so it is only right that any profits not used for the reprinting of more copies will be donated to an eating disorders related charity. The aims of the book are:

  1. To provide comfort and support for sufferers
  2. To demonstrate the everyday realties of living with an eating disorder, as expressed through poetry and biography.
  3. To offer sufferers an example of a less destructive way of expressing emotions

Why Poems?

Poetry is unique in the way that it allows a writer to enter into a stream of consciousness that writing prose does not, since the author is unhindered by the usual laws of language and grammar. Thus it seems to provide many people with a form of cathartic relief that other writing does not

Why Biography?

The book was later expanded to include short biographies since this form of prose depicts the cause, evolution, and recovery from an eating disorder in a way that poetry cannot.Tiger Claw Books was set up in 2001 to print an anthology of poetry on behalf of The Emma Fulham Poetry Book Appeal.

Tiger Claw Books is a non-profit making organisation, since the profits from the sales of the book are donated to eating disorder related charities
