ANGUILLA

Thirty-two square miles of land shaped like an eel. And named after one.

--------------------------------- ----------------------------------

1650: First British settlers arrive on the island, which they name for the eels found in the seas around it. A capital is established at The Valley.

1656: The warlike Carib tribe attack and wipe out the British. The battle rages for the next 150 years.

1824: The island is now administered from St. Kitts. Usually very badly.

1835: Slavery is abolished throughout the British Empire.

1967: Provoked, the Anguillans mount their own mini-invasion of St. Kitts.

1969: The British 'counter-invasion' (the 'Bay of Piglets') restores order.

1980: Anguilla becomes a separate dependency.
