1503: Chris Columbus discovers the Caymans near Jamaica. Originally called Los Tortugas ('place of the turtles') by the Spanish, over time they become better known for the crocodile's smaller relative.

1656: During a war with Spain, Jamaica and the Caymans are captured by the British for Oliver Cromwell. He is not pleased - his navy was supposed to capture Cuba but got the wrong island!

1670: Spain finally recognizes British control of the islands, but continuous pirate activity prevents their development.

1734: First permanent settlement recorded.

1835: Slavery abolished throughout the British Empire.

1863: The islands are annexed to Jamaica.

1932: A major hurricane wreaks terrible damage.

1962: When Jamaica becomes independent, the Caymans vote to stay a dependency.
