Rising from its source near Turners Hill, in West Sussex, the River Medway flows through some of the most beautiful countryside in the U.K. It is navigable up to Tonbridge, in Kent and at 19 miles and 10 locks represents a very leisurely weeks' cruise or a fairly intense weekend trip.

Entry is from the Medway estuary, which is very close to the Thames estuary and therefore not too arduous a journey from the main inland system (if you know what you're doing!). The river is (obviously) tidal until the first lock and sluice at Allington, and these pages don't, at the moment, cover the tidal section in any detail.

Attractions on the river Medway

Please click any RED text on this website to go direct to the site or information

The River provides endless opportunities for leisure enjoyment. About 200 craft can moor in Maidstone Town Centre for only a small overnight charge.

Regular pleasure trips run on the River from the town centre to Allington during the summer.

The River Medway flows through Maidstone, alongside the historical Archbishops' Palace and new Lockmeadow Leisure complex in the centre of town.

Maidstone Borough Council is working towards a 10km long river park from Teston to Allington to mark the Millennium. The Maidstone Millennium River Park will establish a walkway along the river through the town centre including park areas, 'gateways' designed by local artists, dipping ponds, and areas for fishing, relaxation and simply getting away from it all.

Historical Information

The river has been a busy transport route since the sixteenth century.  It was made navigable following Acts of Parliament in 1664, 1740, 1792, 1802 and 1824.  The oast houses, which can still be seen along the route, are evidence of the area’s history of hop growing and brewing.

200 years ago, enterprising businessmen constructed a revolutionary new transport system that led to wealth creation on an unprecedented scale. The purpose of this site is to reveal the hidden world of Britain's inland waterways network. It shows how you can find and enjoy them, how they are managed and how you could get involved in their future conservation. We value your views on our activities and invite you to respond to our consultation documents. You can register to receive personalised information by email. A text only version of the site is available. Enter HERE

Click HERE for the London Canal Museum you can see inside a narrowboat cabin, learn about the history of London's canals, about the cargoes carried, the people who lived and worked on the waterways, and the horses that pulled their boats. Peer down into the unique heritage of a huge Victorian ice well used to store ice imported from Norway and brought by ship and canal boat to be stored. The museum is an attraction housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862-3 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice cream maker, and features the history of the ice trade and ice cream as well as the canals. This is the only London museum of inland waterways and is situated at King's Cross, an accessible central London location.

Other responsibilities include registration of craft, and the licensing of watermen and lightermen, and of river works extending into, over, or under the Thames below mean high water level, for the port of London site go HERE
