Algibra & Ridge runt. Butser Hill, Meon Valley

Left, Algebra VIII Right, Ridge runt

The Algebra was shaped and designed from an old Aero modeller Silhouette print from about 1978 ish. The Fuselage plug was shaped using a piece of 3"x2" pine for the cockpit area and a RN broom stave for the boom. It took about 3 weeks to shape while on deployment in the Gulf. On returning, A fibre glass mould was formed and the finished Fuselage used a mix of Glass and carbon fibre sheet, with Carbon toes, particularly around the tail area. The wings were made from blue foam, veneered with OAK !!, I section spruce spar, Spruce leading edge, with piano wire at the tip of the leading edge (for flying up Butser ,and Malvern Hills). Wing loading was about 16oz per Sq ft and the wing section was an Eppler 374 section (not clark Y) Wing span about 1026", and the fuselage, about 60". Controls included Air brakes, Flaperons and fully moving tailplane. Rudder was a closed loop system. Performance

Needing a slight wind, the ship is surprisingly stable and can fly slower than expected (being caught mid flight by hand). easily turning across the slope or tight turns in thermals. Unexpectedly controllable during basic aerobatics, and easily controlled when flown like a dingbat on laxatives !!. The ship died up Butser hill after an "Expert"liked the model so much, he had to have a go. No comment as to what happened to his nice model parked next to me on the slope shortly afterwards

The Ridge runt, as you can see from the second from top photograph (the yellow glider)), this model has been modified from the original kit. This version works really well. the flaperons were unnecessary but I just had to play !!. With a short moment arm, this model gets a bit tetchy sometimes. At least it's cheap to repair !!

Phoenix Butset 1993

Phoenix

One of the best all round models ever. Bit outdated (mine is over 25 years old !). Mine was my fathers once. Once the but of the Meon Valley flying club, mine flew when they didn't want to risk it. It has even flown with a wing tip missing. This model has flown all over the world with me such as Mt. Vesuvius, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Gibraltar (over the reservoir), Corfu, Souda bay, Greece, and other places too bored to mention. Good piece of kit. Looks a bit tatty now after being tent pegged more times than I've got spots !!

Domine

This is a lovely model picked up from Penn models in Stourbridge, Staffs. plastic formed fuselage, Blue foam wings. I built this almost standard. My model has flown beautifully with Cirrus and Phoenix wings (Don't ask !). The model was Gert cheap and didn't take long to build.

Toucan

This little devil was bought a few months back as an intro to electric flight. It was bought specifically for the trip I am organising soon to travel the Ridgway that passes between Oxford and Winchester (Starts by the wash). The model is ideal to fit in a small rucksack for the bike. I built two at the same time. one standard (almost) and another with (yes you've guessed it) Flaperons (I don't know, I just enjoy making things complicated). Fitted with 400 sized motors and an 8.4v pack, they fly really well for a small model. These were built with interchangeable wings, tailplanes, and almost everything else, so that if one wants to be planted, I can still fly for the rest of the trip without opening the black bag!.

Shed

The Butt of Butser, This was my dads design. One of the first to incorporate the non-use of extensive Malvern hills busting ply. A very good all rounder and with little weight, will stay up with the best. Not much heavier than a gentle lady. Once loaded though, will fly in gusty conditions (sometimes Backwards !!).

Impala

My dad learnt to fly up Malvern back in 18...ish with this. the wing section is similar to the Hi boy and has little more penetration than two house bricks on Viagra. Flew better after strapping a fence lath to the top instead of a wing.

Coke

My own design. Geometry Stolen from the phoenix and designed from the Kloudrider (origonal plans). Built to last and flies better than a dolphin in the sea (don't blow chunks now). Turning out to be a really good all rounder. It's flown in a force 7 in Wales and I live to tell the tail. Most of my aircraft wings will fit, including the built up cirrus wings, making it excellent to fly in light conditions. Penetration is good, and considering the amount of ply and spruce used, surprisingly versatile !!. Might help with mickey mouse as the pilot.

Kloudrider

Been around a bit. Gorgeous model to fly (and repair) Dated but still one of our favourites

Airobat1

dads design. Too hairy for me. Took off, looped, landed, put plane to bed. More flickable than a Tornado on retro

Nimbus

Don't play with knifes !!

Cirrus

Ours is an origonal. I would hate to think how old it is. Ours is orange and loves light conditions. Unable to modify this bird (oh well), but it looks good and flies extremly well

Drifter

Dent

Guess why it's called dent.(cos I wanted to !! ok). designed and built while on a weeks night shift at Elm energy in Wolverhampton. 4 channel, clark y wing section shaped out of a plank of balsa. wingspan about the size of "a plank of balsa". Small, nimble and very quick. Thank JR for my JR 388x radio gear with digital mixing for the V tail (and flaperons !). A right bugger to set up. This model lasted for ages considering, it used to storm across the skies quicker than my eyes would work !!, but the autumn ground beckoned (pegged in about 4" and the fuzz broke

Countryman

Wow. Takes two to three people to launch, and is as large as the spruce goose on steroids (well...nearly). Took ages to build, and takes pride of place... in the loft, as we don't have the room anywhere else to store it. Fantastic model.

Hi boy

complete pap. Bought as an introduction for me into powered aircraft and came conplete with an MDS engine. Handles madder than a birmingham city council worker. For some strange reason though, I can fly this beast, but took all the gear out recently to put into the WOT4

Wot4

Just about set up, but havn't flown yet. This model was donated to me by my good friend John Smith (yes I realise most people know a John smith). He has done a fine job building this model, and He hopes to teach me to fly it ....one day ?

Jolly Roger

My dad's first powered aircraft. My first memories of this plane is.. How sticky can one get by holding one of these things just behind the exaust ? the answer was soon apparent, but I was only 9 years old, and it was fun ?

Bell 222 class 60 Helicopter

Bought as an intro into helicopters. Looked into the box... Took the box to the local shop (model shop that is). and then learnt that a size 60 scale Bell is better than a novices trainer. I am now looking for a cheap trainer to learn to fly helicopters.
