The Hesketh
Vampire was created in response to requests for a touring version of the standard V1000
model. While the engine and frame are common to both machines it cannot be said that it is
just the V1000 with a fairing. As soon as the standard machine was put on the road in
early tests it was apparent that it would make a very nice long distance touring machine
but to do this it required all year around weather protection and proper means of carrying
luggage on these holiday trips.
The fairing designed by John Mockett is based on principles established in MIRA's full sized wind tunnel over many months, the sleek shape of the fairing, combined with the slim frontal area allowed by the V-twin engine, ensures improved penetration and downforce.
Road testing has confirmed that in the Vampire there is, with the standard riding position, excellent protection with more stable wind penetration giving less wind noise to the rider and better handling in adverse conditions together with the bonus of fuel saving and an increase in top speed. Careful attention to internal air management results in a plentiful supply of cool air to the rear cylinder area via strategically placed inlets.
The main fairing body is hand laminated GRP box structure giving strength and rigidity keeping metal bracketry and weight to a minimum. Two essentials to the serious road rider, a clock and other warning instrument to the customers choice are uniquely positioned for easy reference in the screen supports. Remote adjustment of the headlight is possible from within the cockpit and by building the instrument cluster, indicators, mirrors and headlamp into the fairing, mass is removed from the front fork assembly giving better steering response and control.
A panel to the front allows easy assess to the headlight, indicators and instruments for service or replacement and both lower side panels are readily removed for engine inspection. The whole assembly is strong and can resist light accident damage. If repair is required only the panel affected need have attention.
