future effects from the stages of psychosexual development
The events of psychosexual development will lead to fixations in later life. the different way each person goes through the stages may lead to personality traits. some of these are discussed below.
during the oral stage insufficient breast feeding or too much gratification can cause an oral receptive, oral aggressive or oral retentive trait. oral receptiveness leads to being very trusting and dependant. the oral aggressive trait however, leads to dominating behavour whereas oral retentive people may suck their pens or smoke.
the anal retentive trait, due to strict attitudes towards toilet training, is being obsessively clean, overly tidy, very orderly, controlled, punctual, stingy and possessive. anal expulsive people poorly organised and perhaps aggressive. this trait is due to lax attitudes towards toilet training during the anal stage of development.
problems in the phallic stage can lead to the phallic type which are self-assured, vain and impulsive. according to freud, conflicts can lead to homosexuality via rejection of the gender role.
unresolved issues in the genital stage may lead to inabilities to focus on responsibilities involving others i.e. self-obsessive behavour.
