(These are related to the Egton HOGGARTHs but to keep things parcelled up in digestible chunks I'm inclined to call these (descendents of Matthew HOGGARTH and Mary LAW?) "The RHB branch". )
The HOGGARTHs in the Whitby area have mainly been tenant Farmers; often Ag Labs when young but usually becoming independent later in life. Some have been Blacksmiths, Tailors, Butchers, Jet workers and Cartmen but few ever ventured to sea. An exception to this is found with some of the children of Matthew HOGGARTH and Mary LAW who married in St Mary's, the Whitby parish church on 5th November 1804. Birth and death dates for Matthew and Mary are not known though it is thought that Matthew may have been born about 1770 to John HOGGARTH and Jane SHAW who are the source couple for what I call the Egton Branch.
The children of Matthew and Mary were all baptised at St Hilda's Catholic Church, Whitby and consist of six sons followed by four daughters as follows:
Child Born
Thomas 10/08/1805
Philip 15/02/1807
John 11/01/1810
Matthew 14/03/1812
William 14/04/1815
Francis 28/04/1817
Mary 06/04/1820
Ann 07/07/1821
Jane 28/08/1823
Ruth 29/11/1826
Little is known of most of the above children as no descendents have been tracing their tree as far as is known. However we believe Mary HOGGARTH was married to mariner Smith STAINTHORPE and from this union came the descent of Bunty ROBERTS nee TAYLOR of Thorpe; who I met a few years back when she and some friends were taking down the Harvest festival decorations in Old St Stephens church in RHB.
The son Matthew is probably the same person who is mentioned as being the Master of the UNITY in 1856. The UNITY was owned by John HOGGARTH & Co (the "Co" might have included Matthew) the older brother of John. It seems that by October 1869 Matthew was the owner of the UNITY but as reported in the Times (see below) was lost at sea with his only two sons and so this line of HOGGARTHs died out in the male line.
The Muster records (from Yvonne LECK) show:
HOGGARTH W. age 28 born Whitby a mate on the 'Friends' 151 ton
Newcastle to Copenhagen. Mar - May ?1844.
HOGGARTH W. born Egton, a mate on the 'Friends' June - Aug 1845,
entered London 23/2/1849, discharged @ sea 26/2/1849!!! entry says died.
There is also this in the Census index for 1851 for Hartlepool (Piece 2384 folio 335) - however the age is wrong as it should be 35 if it is the William who is the son of Matthew and Mary - apart from the fact that he supposedly died in 1849:

The son John married Christiana ROBINSON in the old St Stephen's church in Fylingdales on or about 10th August 1836 (marriage Licence is dated 9th August according to Margaret DENHAM). John was said to be 24 and Christiana 22 of Scalby (near Scarborough). It is thought that there were no children from this marriage and Christiana died aged 34 on 1st January 1849 according to the inscription on her grave at Old St Stephens (see below).
John then married Betsy WHALER of Ingoldmills or Trusthorpe in Lincolnshire on 7th February 1850 in Whitby Parish church. Betsy was daughter of Edward. By this time John was 40 and Betsy about 34. Betsy is shown living at the Esplanade in RHB in 1851 with John presumably being at sea. From this union came children John 20 April 1851, Betsy c. 1851 and James c. 1853.
Jerry PLATT said John was a ship's captain for Storm & Co of Robin Hood's Bay in 1854.
From the January 2003 edition of the Cleveland FHS Journal; Ships of Whitby
extracted from Turnbull's Register of 1856 by Peter HOGG:
Ship BRITANNIA, port WHIT56, Off No. 22410, rig BRIG, master J. HOGGARTH,
built 1806 ABERDEEN, 130 Tons, owners J. HOGGARTH & C. SEDMAN, Robin Hood's
Bay.
Ship UNITY, port WHIT56, Off No. 5096, rig hm, , master M. HOGARTH, built
1817 Bridlington, 80 Tons, owners J HOGGARTH & Co. Robin Hood's Bay.
In 1861 the family are shown at 2 Bloomswell RHB and John is described as a Shipowner.
Whitby Gazette advert dated 26th January, 1861, that reads:
'TO BE SOLD by PRIVATE CONTRACT, the BRIG "BRITANNIA," of Whitby, Burthen per Register 119 Tons and carries 200 Tons of Coals at 11 feet water.
Also, all that SCHOONER "UNITY" of Whitby, 78 Tons Register, and carries 120 Tons of Coals at about 9 feet water.
Both vessels are in good working condition.
For particulars apply to Mr. John Hoggarth, the owner, Robin Hood's Bay.'
From 1863 Crew lists and agreements (supplied by Yvonne Leck from Teeside Archives)
HOGGARTH John age 53 born Whitby. Master on the 'George' reg Whitby 1861, 175 ton. His address RH Bay Jan - June 1863. West H'Pool to London. On the same ship is William HOGGARTH apprentice age 19 born H'Pool (indenture date 12/3/1859)
In the 1865 List of the Robin Hoods Bay Ship Insurance Association there is a John Hoggarth, owner of the 'George', 175 tons, with John Hoggarth as master"
1868 Poll Book for Durham South:
Under Stranton (West Hartlepool District) is John HOGGARTH of Robin Hoods Bay who seems not to have voted. In those days you could have a vote where you lived and, if you owned property in a different town, a vote there as well.
The 1868 Poll Book for Durham South under Stranton (West Hartlepool District) shows John HOGGARTH of Robin Hoods Bay who seems not to have voted. In those days you could have a vote where you lived and, if you owned property in a different town, a vote there as well.
In 1871 the family are still at Bloomswell. Betsy is now called Elizabeth - to distinguish her from her daughter Betsy or maybe just as respect for her age and position. The two sons are not at home for the census.
1878 is a bad year for the family. 2nd April the father John dies and then on 21st August the eldest son John, who is a Master Mariner, is drowned while bathing at Mill Beck Sands - locally known as Boggle Hole. The widowed Elizabeth carries on living in RHB with her daughter Betsy and later her grandchildren and dies in 1893.
Betsy is the only known daughter of John HOGGARTH and Betsey WHALER. She married Sampson Estill CLARK who was a Master Mariner of RHB and they had children Elizabeth Whaler c. 1878, Sampson Estill c. 1886 and Angelina 8th May 1889. In the 1881 census Sampson was with his brother John H. CLARK in Hartlepool showing that the CLARKs as well as the HOGGARTHs had contact with Hartlepool.
Betsy died 15th My 1893 aged 41. Her gravestone at Old St Stephens also records the death of her husband Sampson Estill CLARK - drowned at Newcastle 16th April 1903 aged 51. The grave is just a few plots to the left of those of the parents and brother (John) of Betsy.
No parish or civil records are available to me for the birth or baptism of James - however from the census records for 1861 and 1901 James was born in RHB in about 1854. James married Hannah Mary THOMPSON (of Whitby, father Robert THOMPSON mother Mary)
From about 1881 to at least 1891 James was a Master Mariner and living in West Hartlepool - judging by the dates and places of birth as given for his two sons John Robert (born 1881) and Ernest born 17 May 1886) in the 1891 & 1901 census. The family has not been found in the 1881 census. The ENOCH index for the 1891 Census shows Hannah Mary (age 32) in West Hartlepool with her two sons; John R. age 10 and Ernest age 4. James was not at home. The 1912 newspaper report suggests the family moved to Cardiff in 1892.
Hannah Mary died in the last quarter of 1897 in Cardiff (ref 11a 154).
The 1901 census has James living in Cardiff, a steamship owner with his sons John (a shipping clerk) and Ernest.
The Mormon's Ancestral File has James marrying Mary Elizabeth GODDEN 12 Feb 1903 at Fylingdales. This is a secondary source but the name GODDEN matches with the MI for Mary Elizabeth where it seems she may have had a brother called Matthew GODDEN. Margaret DENHAM has added that "in Whitby registration district 1903 there is a marriage of a James HOGGARTH to Mary Elizabeth GODDEN. (Could be a different James of course). Could the Matthew GODDEN in the same grave be her brother ? See 1901 census and 1881 census." I've added the 1881 & 1891 census below - seems conclusive that it was Mary Elizabeth GODDEN who married James HOGGARTH and Matthew GODDEN, on the same Gravestone, is her brother.
From a report in the Times of 1910 July 13 "Messrs. Robert Thompson and sons (Limited) , Sunderland, launched from
their Southwick yard a cargo steamer, built to the order of Messrs. James
HOGGARTH and Co., Cardiff. The dimensions are : - Length, 350ft,: breadth
50ft,: and depth moulded, 25ft 10in. The engines, by the North-Eastern
Marine Engineering Company (limited), Sunderland, have cylinders 25in., 42in.,
and 58in., with a stroke of 45in.
It is probable that the above ship was named Corbridge and was
sunk by the German ship Mowe - some time before being
reported in Feb 1916, in the Times.

James HOGGARTH of 59 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, Shipowner. Seriously injured on Preston - Blackpool Road. Wife and 2 sons. He was born at Robin Hood's Bay. Master Mariner with
Turnbull's. Settled in Cardiff 20 years ago.
James must have died by 1928 judging by the record of the MI for his widow Mary Elizabeth in New St Stephen's Fylingthorpe - "In loving memory of Mary Elizabeth widow of the the late James Hoggarth of Robin Hood's bay and Cardiff who died July 22 1928 aged 71 years".
By 1916 John Robert and his brother are said to have moved to North Wales. John Robert married Elizabeth Mary EVANS and had three children. He died in North Wales in 1934.
By 1916 Ernest and his brother are said to have moved to North Wales. Ernest married Elizabeth Stephenson LEECH and had sons Leo Peter HOGGARTH and John Anthony HOGGARTH, the latter being subsequently the stepfather of Jerry PLATT who supplied much of this latter information. Ernest Died in North Wales in 1929.
Note that Jerry PLATT has gathered together a much more detailed account of the later generations which I've not included.
In "Hearts of Oak" O'Connor has for his Marriage 19 - Matthew HOGGARTH and Mary LAW, Peak Hill.
The baptisms for these children at St Hilda's Catholic church Whitby can be seen
in the IGI.

A Melancholy Story
Sir, - May I call the attention of your readers to the melancholy
facts related below, with a view to public assistance for a widow,
who, by the recent fearful gale, has lost her husband and her two
sons? The name of the family is Hoggarth, and not only have the
entire male members of the family - father and two sons - been swept
away in the storm, but the youngest married daughter, in giving
birth to her first child, died on the very day - Friday week - that
the tidings of the fate of her father and brothers were made known.
The vessel in which the poor men have been lost was a small schooner,
named the Unity, of which Mr Matthew Hogarth was both captain and
owner, and his two sons seamen. She left Deal in ballast, bound for
West Hartlepool, on the 13th inst., and was observed in distress in
Boston Deeps on Tuesday, the 19th, when the gale was at its height.
The crew, it would appear, had left the vessel some time before
this, for when a lifeboat that had put off to her assistance got
alongside not a single person could be found on board: and from the
fact of the boat also being gone, it is supposed that the poor
fellows must have taken to it in the hope of saving their lives. Up
to the present time, however, nothing has been heard of them, and
there is too much reason to fear that thy have all perished.
Besides the captain and his two sons, there was on board a young
man, named Robert Hunter, an orphan, who had served his
apprenticeship with Mr Hoggarth, and was looked upon as one of his
family. The captain leaves a widow and three children to mourn his
loss, and the widow has by these distressing occurrences been
deprived of her husband and her two sons.
Any assistance that the benevolent public may be inclined to afford
will be received by Mr. Ralph Ward-Jackson, M.P., Greatham-hall,
Stockton-on-tees; the Rev. H. J. Martin, vicar of Christchurch,
West Hartlepool; and by
Your obedient servant,
The editor of the South Durham Herald.
West Hartlepool, Oct 27.
On the face of it the story has not much to do with Whitby but I
think it highly likely that the family came from that area. There
is a good chance that Matthew is the brother of the John Hoggarth of
RHB and the son of Matthew Hoggarth and Mary Law.
A follow up article said they collected about £80.

Hello Bryan,
I'm following up our recent mails because I had a further link in mind, and it looks as if it does exist. Having read Jerry's letter I guess he might also be interested.
STORM AND COMPANY had a John Hoggarth, Master Mariner, who married Christiana Robinson who was one of many daughters of William Robinson of Bay Mill. My brother, Alan, thought that Christiana had died and that John had re-married. I am now confident that this John is the John Hoggarth who married Elizabeth Waller. Thus:
Christiana, (first) wife of John Hoggarth died/buried at Robin Hood's Bay Jan 19th 1849.
John Hoggarth, WIDOWER. Master Mariner, resident Whitby and son of Matthew Hoggarth, farmer, married on 7th February 1850, Elizabeth Whaler, resident Fylingdales, daughter of Edward Whaler, farmer.
The spelling of Whaler is different from Waller, but I suspect some mistake in the records. Also Elizabeth is shown as resident in Fylingdales rather than her home town in Norfolk, but then she may well have moved to Fylingdales thus meeting John.
I shall send you the marriage certificate of John Hoggarth and Elizabeth Whaler separately.
Two other items of some interest:
Alan believes there to be still resident in Robin Hood's Bay a Philip Hoggarth in his late 70s, a son of a Frank Hoggarth of Hull.
Also the Geoff Estill you met and spoke to is on our tree. Maybe you can take a photo another time!
Regards,
Roy
Bryan
Hi there - my name is Jeremy Platt, stepson of a Hoggarth - a resident of Melbourne Australia, home of the William Web Ellis rugby trophy for a couple more weeks.
This relates to the John Hoggarth, master mariner in your Odds and Sods page.
"Your" John's widow, Elizabeth, was still living in Fylingdales in 1881 with her daughter and was listed as a widow and shipowner.I think this man had two sons (at least). One the younger John you mention (born 20 April 1851), the other was James, born Robin Hood's Bay in 1854/5.
James was born in Robin Hood's Bay in 1855 and married Hannah Mary Thompson of Whitby (father Robert Thompson, mother Mary) who was born in 1858. They had sons John Robert and Ernest who were both born in Hartlepool in 1881 and 1886 respectively (Ernest on 17th May inst - I have a copy of his birth certifiacte). James is listed as a Master Mariner on Ernest's birth certificate.
They had moved to Cardiff by 1897, when Hannah Mary died in the last quarter of the year (Cardiff 11a 154).. James was listed there in the 1901 census but this caused a lot of problems (not unusual I guess) The computer search listed Jane as a lodger, male and a shipowner and John as 30 years old. Scrutiny of the original record showed it was James (aged 46), not Jane. It also showed that John was actually 20 not 30). James was listed as a steamship owner.
By 1916 the two "boys" moved to N Wales and Ernest married Elizabeth Stephenson Leech and had sons Leo Peter and John Anthony, the latter being my stepfather from 1948 to 1997. John Robert and Ernest both died in N Wales, Robert in 1934, Ernest in 1929. John Anthony had 4 children of his own, with my mother, all of whom still live in N Wales along with my full brother. I am the only one to "leave home" - and that with a vengeance by going to the anitpodes.
My step-father's brother, Leo Peter, lived for the latter part of his life in Sydney Australia, not far from where I was living at the time and was buried in the Blue Mountains W of Sydney in 1983.
John Robert married Elizabeth Mary Evans and had three children.
The only uncertainty in all this is whether "your" John Hoggarth had another son James as well as the John you refer to. The references all indicate it as most likely.
I hope this is of interest. I can supply more details if you wish.
Cheers

Thanks for that confirmation. The wife Betsy (christened Elizabeth 21 April 1816) in the 1861 census was born in Trusthorpe, Lincolnshire of Edward Waller and his wife Rebecca.
Your prompt message saved me the expense of getting James's birth certificate for confirmation.
