Extracts from Diary of Rev Daniel Duck of Danby

What is shown below was transcribed be me in September 2004 at the Whitby Lit & Phil.  What I read from was not the actual diary but the handwritten transcription which was made by someone in 1900s on a set on reporters notebooks bought from Woolworths.   The great advantage of this was that all the entries had been indexed, thus what would have taken me a week I was able to do, almost, in three hours.  

Daniel Duck was vicar from 1781 until 1825 after which his son took over.  Daniel was buried in the Churchyard in 1829.  

Daniels Ducks diaries cover 1788 to 1824 and were in ten volumes but unfortunately volume 9 has been lost and is not transcribed.   I was told that volume 9 must have been available to John Davison when he wrote the articles for the Whitby Gazette between 1959 and 1966 which were later published as  "Chronicles of Lealholm & Glaisdale", published by J W and M E Duck.

(The IGI has Danvers ALLIN marrying Isabel HEWGILL on this day.  This Danvers may have been the one baptised in Sneaton in 1760)
28 Friday Went to the Visitation & to Mr Giffersons at night
29 Saturday Returned home in the forenoon - went a fishing afternoon.

Married Joseph Allin & Elizabeth Frank Rob* Harrison & Mary & Rich^d Harrison & Nancy (or Nanny) drunk tea.

Windy blustering day - got up in morning & called Geo Harrison - good deal of thatch blown off - John Hugill dined with us - churched Geo Sigsworth's wife - John Pierson here in evening - baptised Joseph Allan's child 
(note: the index "John" is wrong.  According to the parish record this is the baptism of Danvers ALLIN)

Walked to R Prind's forenoon & got blooded - walked to Castleton with Polly afternoon - Wm Allon called in evening - lame in my back.

Horden thrashed wheat - John went to pay Libby Allan her interest - sent receipts with Jos. Baylieff to Whitby for bounty  - was at the lodge afternoon.

Horden at highways - William - thrashed - I went to baptise John Allan's child towards night Thos Hugill here at night - Mary Sanderson worked here.  

(9/12) 1822 May 28 Tuesday
Horden at Hutton for lime - John carried hams to Wm Hartas in morning - bstone? - got 40 Shills & 6 pence - little Betsey Frank went home forenoon.  Henry Linton & little John came up and took Hanny Linton & little Hannah down - John Allan call'd.  

(9/30) 1822 September 8 Sunday At Westerdale church forenoon -called at Horden's xtnd Robt Porrit's child & churched his wife as I rode to Danby Church - xtnd John Allan's child at Church - John Harrison here at night.  
(according to the parish record Mary ALLIN, daughter of John, was baptised Feb 4 1822 so there is something odd here)

Wm Bailieff walled & I paid him 10/6.  John rode to pay Libby Allen interest - I rode to John Robinson forenoon & gave him 90 pounds school money to carry to Mr Petch. Nanny over the beck at night.

Married Frank Allin & Ann Underwood - our foks & Margaret Horden led seaves forenoon & Nanny Duck & Usco? spread hay in Inggfield - Jno Sanderson finished mowing in Ingfield ?? Dale fiched? forenoon & went home after ten - I gave him 5 pounds.

 I was in Horden's forenoon - John & George at Fryup - paid Libby Allon & got aldes at Wm Breckon's - Margaret Horden here.  

(9/102) 1823 December 26 Friday
Saw Richard Arcoat forenoon - baptised John Allon's child & chd his wife afternoon & saw Jane Blackburn - bot bit of mutton at Prind's - Joseph Dawson & his brother called.  
(according to the parish record this was the baptism of Ann ALLIN)(the day after, boxing day, contains the comment "plow stots here")

(9/145) 1824 October 20 Wednesday
Our folks & Margt. Horden & Dolly finished taking up potatoes.  Mr Dale dined & went home - I paid him 2 pounds - Peetty at Castleton & bot Nanny gown - John paid Libby Allan 25 shills.
