Extracts from:
Hearts of Oak, a study of the recusancy in the Moorlands of North East Yorkshire 1569 to 1840
by J L O’Connor, 1974. 2A St Aidan's Cresc., Billingham, Cleveland, TS22 5AD
[Extracts by B Hoggarth, of "Hoggarths". NB: There are known to be errors in the original and I have probably introduced a few more in typing it out. I do not have a copy of this document. I borrowed it through the public library service and made the notes below for my own use. I have tried retrospectively to indicate my comments from the verbatim transcript of the original by putting my comments in "[ ]" brackets and the words in italics]
School --
In that year a new venture was started under father Bertout, the French émigré priest aforementioned. £10 per annum was for the schoolmaster. The first three schoolmasters were apparently Michael Snowden, 1802 till 9/10/1804; Thomas Powell 22/4/1805 till 1820; and later Cecily Hoggarth nee Harrison. [later in the book O’Connor said that Cecily was school mistress at Ugthorpe briefly in 1804, and under the Harrisons he says she was b. 1745 m. to William Hoggarth, Mickleby and d 1836]

The figures on the extreme right are the bench rents to offset the cost. Those in the congregation refer to the number of seats for the family, and the others to the bench numbers, each holding six worshippers. There were more obliterations than indicated, mostly the result of a death in the parish.

Extracts from the papers of W G Ward
The first item consists sixty seven leaves from what appears to have been a tall narrow cash book, roughly fourteen inches by six inches. They are all extremely tattered, faded and yellow, but the handwriting, except where it is missing at an edge is largely legible. The leaves may have come from two books and contained accounts, what may have been notes for sermons, copies of correspondence and births and burials relating to Egton Glaisdale and Goathland between 1761 and 1778. They are the work of rev. Jonathan Robinson, in charge of Egton and its adjoining chapelries for sixty years until his death, aged 89, on December 5th 1777, and Rev. Richard Robinson, his son who succeeded him. It is evident that the latter had a kind of solicitor’s job as he prepared wills, and apparently had official duties in connection with the same.
(*BT) means missing from Bishops Transcripts.

Presentation to the Very Rev canon Callebert M.R. R.D. 1899:
According to a newspaper report this was after his forty years ministry at Egton Bridge and one of those present is named as G. HOGGARTH.
Photo of Egton Bridge, south of the river, with a comment that the site of Fr. Postgate’s birth was part of the tenancy of George HOGGARTH in 1853.
From a family bible of William White Richard Harrison married Elizabeth White, Greenhouses and the last of their 10 children, William b. 21/4/1797 married Mary Hoggarth of Whitby in 1832. Their children were John, 6/10/1832 and William 2/6/1836.
From the Harrison Chart prepared by Fr. Basil and his brother Edwin :-

"schedule of sale of the Egton Estate in 1853".
Fr. Nicholas Rigby succeeded Fr. John Woodcock at Egton Bridge and took the records with him when he went to Ugthorpe. This explains why Fr. Greenhalgh laments the lack of records on his arrival at Egton Bridge in April 1835 when he recommenced them and then sent them all to Somerset House. (See appendix) So baptisms of Egton families between May 16th 1827 and April 14th 1835 exclusive can be found in the Ugthorpe registers and Ugthorpe in the above entries means Egton Bridge. The same will apply to entries relating to other families between those dates.
Egton 29/4/1829 George BARKER Jnr married Mary HOGGARTH, wit Ann BARKER
Whitby Chapel David BARKER married Helen HOGGARTH (probably after 29/7/1848 which was the date given for the marriage above between John BARKER & Sarah SLATER at the same place) Children Mary Helen b. 21/6/1854 and probably others.
Birth of Joseph WELFORD in 4/7/1825 (parents George & Mary HUSBAND) the witnesses were Wm. READMAN and Ann HOGGARTH.
William WELFORD married Judith HOGGARTH at Ugthorpe on 5/11/1812. The first children were probably on the missing pages of the Ugthorpe register. The Family lived at America House. Children:
