The photo below was sent to me by Mary YOUNG (nee LEWIS) who got it from Sylvia HARRISON. As far as I know this is the only picture of Mary in existence. Mary YOUNG's Grandfather Stephenson HOGGARTH was the third son of Mary STEPHENSON. The fifth son of Mary was Allin HOGGARTH, my Grandad. Sylvia HARRISON (nee COSTELLO) is a grandaughter of Hannah HOGGARTH who was the 7th child of Mary STEPHENSON. In my file I have 45 Great Grandchildren of Mary.

Mary was born at half past one in the morning of 26th September 1850 in Dunsley. Her birth certificate (copy below) gives her father as Thomas STEPHENSON a Farmer of Dunsley and her Mother as Mary, maiden name HARRISON. Unfortunately there is no indication of just what farm they were on. Dunsley these days has very few houses. There is, in the "centre of the village" a school house on the small green which is surrounded by Home Farm, Low Farm, Fairfax Farm and a hotel which was built in 1900. Apart from these there are a couple of new and a couple of old houses nearby. It might have been noticed by some on the Teletext of UK TV that the Hotel does anti-Christmas breaks for those who wish to avoid the festivities. |
The 1841 census does not show the parents of Mary at Dunsley so they were quite possibly still at Birkhead which was a farm a little to the north where the Stephenson family had been for several generations.
The 1851 census for Dunsley (Folio 617) after two other farmers gives Mary's family as:
|
Thomas STEPHENSON |
Head |
Married |
age 57 |
Farmer of 55 acres |
born Lyth |
|
Mary Do |
Wife |
Married |
age 40 |
|
born Danby |
| John Do | Son | age 4 | born Dunsley | ||
| Robert Do | Son | age 3 | born Dunsley | ||
| Hannah Do | Daur | age 2 | born Dunsley | ||
| Mary Do | Do | 5 Mths | born Dunsley | ||
| John COTSON | Servant | U | age 32 | Farm Servant | born Danby |
| Jane HILL | Do | U | age 21 | House Servant | born Lyth |
It is remarkable how quick Thomas and his wife were having children. Possibly they thought that time was running out. They has been married in 1845 at Whitby Parish Church.
The 1861 census for Dunsley (reverse of Folio 57) has amongst several other entries described as Dunsley Village:
|
Mary STEPHENSON |
Head |
W |
age 50 |
Farmer of 60 acres |
born Lyth |
| John Do | Son | age 14 | born Dunsley | ||
| Hannah Do | Daur | age 12 | born Dunsley | ||
| Mary Do | Daur | age10 | born Dunsley | ||
| William Do | Son | age 6 | born Dunsley | ||
| Jane GARBUTT | Lodger | W | age 55 | Formerly Dressmaker | born Birkhead |
| James RICHARDSON | Serv | U | age 29 | Carter | born Liverton |
Other things of note in this census are that Heulay (sic) farm was then occupied by a William DOBSON and family and in the nearby hamlet of Newholme there was a 3 year old lad called Allin HOGGARTH and his family.
The next view we have of Mary is in the 1871 census - or it would be if I could find where I put it.
So we move on to the 1881 census where, again in Dunsley Village, we have on the back of Folio 14:
|
William STEPHENSON |
Head |
Unm |
age 26 |
Farmer of 80 acres |
born Dunsley Village |
| Mary Do | Sister | Do | age 30 | Brother's Housekeeper | born Do Do |
| John RIPLEY | Servant | Do | age 22 | Farm Servant Indoor | born Aislaby Do |
Head Gains Farm (aka Heulah Farm) was at this time occupied by a Thomas YEOMAN and family. At the time of this census Allin HOGGARTH was a lodger on a farm at West Knapton which is down near Malton.
Now Mary gets married to Allin HOGGARTH
The next census was in 1891 where we find the the STEPHENSON family is no longer in Dunsley village and Allin and Mary HOGGARTH are at Headgays Farm with children as shown:
|
Allin HOGGARTH |
Head |
M | age 33 |
Farmer |
born Newholm |
| Mary Do | Wife | Do | age 40 | born Dunsley | |
| William J. Do | Son | age 8 | Scholar | born Do | |
| Gertrude E. Do | Daur | age 7 | Scholar | born Do | |
| Albert V. Do | Son | age 5 | born Do | ||
| Allin Do | Son | age 4 | born Do | ||
| Robert S. Do | Son | age 3 | born Do | ||
| Hannah Do | Daur | age 1 | born Do |
For some reason we do not see above an entry for Stephenson HOGGARTH who, according to Ian KEELER was born on 17th May 1884 and so would have been age 6 at the time of the 1891 census. There is an entry in the index of Births registration for him in Quarter 2 of 1884 in volume 9d page 497, and we know he got married etc - otherwise we would not have his Grandchildren Mary, Ivan, Ian and many others.
In an index for the 1891 census for Whitby there a 36 year old William STEPHENSON born in Dunsley who was probably Mary's brother. The is also an Ann E STEPHENSON aged 36 on the same folio so maybe William got married.
And then in 1894 Mary dies of Tubercular Peritonitis Exhaustion.
