The DVD It's easy to forget Joel Schimacher's good films (Flatliners, Falling Down) when you see yet another second rate yarn raised from the Hollywood grave. However, if dumb, tedious vampire flicks are just your thing, then you'll be pleased to hear that this is a fine Panavision transfer, with rich colours picking their way out of the jet black Californian night sky. A close up inspection shows that this is not the finest quality that money can buy, with the ever present minor artifacts ever present, but the sofa position happily renders them invisible. The sound mix (5.1 in 1988?!) is fine, if a little lacklustre - somehow you expect more fireworks on the part of the surrounds than you get here. A trace amount of background hiss can be heard in the quiet passages, but you'll only notice if you're so bored you can't think of anything else to do. Otherwise, this a fairly standard issue Warner disc, with some well written and reasonably interesting production notes thrown in. Oh, one final point - this is possibly the first accurately labelled Warner disc released, promising - and delivering - widescreeen 2.35:1. Well done. |
