Thorley Village Pond - Small Red-eyed Damselflyn three males this morning; presumably freshly emerged today. Only one Common Blue and a male Emperor keeping them company.

Thorley Wash - WASP SPIDER. It's my first ever; and might even be the first record of the species in Herts - certainly is for the Wash. It's a large distinctive Orb (Web) spider with amazing yellow and black bands on the body. The species has only relatively recently colonised counties along the South Coast and in particular Essex; but is spreading. So watch out - they bite!! - Dave Sampson

24th July - SAL - 232 Small Red-eyeds, virtually all of which were males! Also 1 male Ruddy Darter..

The warm weather seems to have encouraged a fair bit of lepidoptera movement over the last few days with at least 65 Painted Lady's today (up from c.12 on Saturday), also well over 100 Silver Ys.

22nd July - SAL - Ruddy Darter (3, all males), Common Darter (15+), Emperor (15+), Brown Hawker (1), Black-tailed Skimmer (30+), 4-Spot (3), Broad-bodied (6), Emerald Damsel (10+), Blue-tailed (10+), Common Blue (30+), Azure (1), Red-eyed (30+) & Small Red-eyed (min 60+, although probably three-figures again!).  

Also 17 species of butterfly on the wing: Painted Lady (12+), Red Admiral (3), Peacock, Small Tort, Comma, Large White, Small White, Brimstone (1m), Speckled Wood, Brown Argus (1), Common Blue (10+), Gatekeeper (40+), Meadow Brown, Small Skipper, Essex Skipper (1+), Large Skipper (4) & Ringlet (1) - the latter in a very sorry state, I guess this year's first brood must be virtually over?
 
Also, 1 Grass Snake & 2 corking Latticed Heaths. - Stephen Patmore

1 marbled white (near powerlines and then over Thorley Wash),1 comma (photgraphed),4 red admirals,3 gatekeepers, 35+ Essex skippers, 27 small skippers, 21 ringlets, 7 large whites, 18 meadow browns, 1 white plume moth (wonderful), 7 riband wave, cinnebar caterpillars on ragwort near footbridge at Pig Lane,

3 emperor dragons, 47+ red eyed damsels, 27 male banded dems, 4 female banded dems, 3 azure dams, 2 common blue dams, 5 blue tailed dams, 1 brown hawker,

numerous cardinal beetles and/or soldier beetles.1 strange house/blow fly with thick light brown hoop on abdomen plus a variety of un id'd moths. Jono Forgham

28th SAL Red-veined Darter (14 males seen on total around the whole of the large lake; could be a slight overlap of individuals; but only slight); Emeralds - well over 50 individuals - mainly teneral stage but some very lovely males and adult females); Red-eyed Damselfly (4); Small red-eyed Damelsfly (2 - seen on the algae mats); 4 Spot Chaser (4); Broad-Bodied Chaser (2); Black-tailed Skimmer (everywhere - probably in excess of 100 individuals); Blue-tailed Damselfly (6); Common Blue Damsel (20+); Azure Damselfly (2); Emperor Dragonfly (2male; 1 female). 24th SAL 10 Emperor, 50+ Black tailed Skimmer, 4 Broad Bodied Chaser, 15 Four Spotted Cha ser, 6 Red Veined Darter (all males), and Damselflys - 1000's Common Blue (i gave up looking for Azures!), 20 Blue Tailed, 30 Emerald, 2 Red eyed, 4 Small Red Eyed. Mike Harris

23rd Stansted Airport Lagoons (SAL) 8+ male Red-veined Darters . Best seen late morning/early afternoon when basking on the access road on the eastern side of the lagoons. Also on the wing over the last few days have been good numbers of Emperors, Four-spots, Broad-bodieds, and Black-tailed Skimmers, along with all the usual damsels. Stephen Patmore
