MEMBERSHIP OF THE RAMBLERS' ASSOCIATION

Membership
Members receive, as an entitlement of their membership, at no extra cost:

* An annual membership card
* Annual Yearbook & Accommodation Guide
* Quarterly colour magazine, The RambIer,
* Up to four local/regional area newsletters a year where published
* Campaign information sheets on request

Members can join a local group of their choice and take part in its programme of walks and social events. If no choice is made on joining the Ramblers' the new member will be assigned to a local group, depending on their postcode. Members may also participate in events and walks run by any other group. They can also borrow maps from the Association's map lending library at a nominal charge.

Many outdoor equipment shops offer discounts to Ramblers members on production of their card, though this is at the shop's discretion.

On joining the Ramblers each member agrees "to respect the countryside, its beauty and wildlife and to promote access to it on foot." Those taking part in walks and other events respect the life of the countryside by leaving no litter, doing no unnecessary damage, keeping dogs under control, etc.

The Ramblers' Association is mindful of the needs and concerns of rural communities. It is keen to work with members of these communities to ensure that the social, economic and environmental well-being of rural areas is maintained and improved.

Over 50% of members pay their subscriptions by direct debit, which saves them trouble and greatly reduces the RA's administration costs and bank charges. Members can, of course, cancel the arrangement at any time.

The revisions to the Gift Aid scheme made in April 2000 mean it is now much simpler to make subscriptions to the RA tax effective. All that is needed is a simple declaration (form 16 provided by the Ramblers) and all subsequent donations and subscriptions are increased in value because the Inland Revenue gives us a tax refund. Only those who pay income tax in the UK can make the declaration.

All Ramblers' Association members are entitled to attend and vote at the annual general meetings of their area and group. They can propose motions for debate at their annual meetings and they can stand for election to their area and group committees.

Through their areas, members may also seek election as delegates to General Council, where national policy is determined. Members of General Council may stand for election to the Executive Committee.

In Wales and Scotland, members can, through their areas and groups, seek election to the Welsh and Scottish Councils and their committees.
