The Friends’ School, Wigton (Brookfield) |

|
Wigton School was opened by the Society of Friends (Quakers) for Cumberland and Northumberland on 4 September 1815. The premises were at Highmoor in existing buildings leased at an annual rent of 27 guineas with an initial student intake of 9 boys and 8 girls. Permanent buildings were soon commissioned at the main school site at Brookfield and these came into use in 1826. These were planned by a London architect in the Georgian style. Further expansion took place over the years with peak student numbers reaching around 210 in the mid-1970’s. Regrettably there followed a sustained decline in student numbers that led to the eventual closure of the school in 1984. The main buildings were subsequently destroyed by fire in January 1989. |
