6 Burley House

Burley House was built by Thomas Maude who was a poet in 1798. It is the only house in Burley, which is a Grade 1 listed building. The 1851 census shows the owner as Lydia Anderton, aged 60, a widow and described as a gentlewoman. Also resident was another gentlewoman aged 39 who was a visitor and they were looked after by 7 servants. The house was then occupied by William Rouse and his family. He is described as a Worsted spinner but must have had quite a lot of money, as also living with him were his wife, 5 children and 6 servants including a governess from Devon and a footman. The 1871 census shows Mrs Rouse as widowed and lists the sons of the family as having entered their father's business. It is also interesting to note a visitor resident at the time from the East Indies who was a Captain in the Army. In later years the house has been St. Phillips School and also a restaurant and is now used as offices.
