12 Dial House

Dial House is one of the oldest remaining houses in the village. In the census of 1851 and 1861 the owner was a Francis Smith described as a landed proprietor. By 1871 it was owned by the first of three doctors to live in the house, a William Murray born in Paisley, Scotland. The second doctor to live there was Harold Hebblethwaite who was a surgeon according to the 1891 Census, but became the medical officer of health in Burley and lived there until the 1920's. He was followed by Dr. Garscadden, another Scot who had a surgery inside the house. He had been a military doctor. He also owned another surgery in Menston and moved there in the mid 1960's. The surgery eventually moved to a new site in Grange Road.
