1 The Grange

Sponsored by: Burley Community Council

The trail starts here at The Grange, built by John Peele Clapham in the early 1840's. Extensive alterations were made to both the property and grounds in the 1860's by the then owner Thomas Emsley who was a wealthy landed gentleman. The last person to own the house as a home was James Hodson and after his death, at the turn of the century, the house was left standing empty. The Burley Urban District Council purchased the property in 1904 for £1660 and altered it to provide a suite of offices. Part of the house was used as premises for a social club for the men of the village. Up until recently, the building was used for adult education by Bradford College.
