11 The Original Malt Shovel & Pudding Tree
Originally the Malt Shovel had a thatched roof, but this was replaced in 1880 by the new building that boasted three storeys, a large coffee room to seat a hundred people and an assembly room. A 1904 advertisement stated there were spacious bedrooms, choice wines and spirits, billiards, posting and cigars of the finest brands. Although overnight accommodation is no longer available, it featured in magazines such as Vogue following its change into Cutlers Bar and Brasserie. It briefly became the Valentino Grande, an Italian restaurant, before changing to its present name of The Original Malt Shovel.
Next to the building is the site of the Pudding Tree where up to 1787 a feast was held where a great pudding consisting of thirty stones of flour with like amounts of fruit was boiled, sold and eaten under the great Elm Tree.
