15 The Red Lion

The Red Lion was originally a cottage type Inn. Before rebuilding in 1893 by Whitakers Brewery, the 1851 Census tells us there was a resident brewer employed by the publican Elizabeth Brumfitt.

The land behind Red Lion was the venue of the Burley Feast (organised by the Salem Chapel) celebrated well into the 1920's. It was held on the nearest Sunday to the 11th October and featured a fair with roundabouts, swing boats, coconut shies etc. There were also competitions, a marquee for dancing and exhibitions.
