NEW GARDENING PRODUCTS

Here are some interesting new seeds that I noticed in the 2012 Chiltern Seeds Catalogue:

Kabuki F1 Hybrid is a mini calabrese that can be spaced closely together (code: 1734A). Mohawk F1 hybrid (1822D) is an early maturing sweet pepper that's ideal for patio growing and there is also the hot pepper Ember Explosive, which has purple leaves (1356L). If you want to make soup why not try out the red celery called Red Soup (1359K). Chiltern Seeds now stock a Mexican vegetable called Huauzontle (1360J); a very sweet mini pea called Peawee 65 (1372B) and the Californian Herb Papalo, which has a coriander flavour (1388L). Their single serving sized new squash called Honey Bear sounds interesting too (1361J). Finally, although not new items,  I would also like to point out that they do a children's flower mixture and a children's vegetable selection and if you want to grow Collards they stock Georgia Southern - a heritage variety (1357F). You can find out more about these seeds at the Chiltern Seeds Website.

In
The Suffolk Herbs 2012 Catalogue: Firstly,  I would like to mention two Basils - Holy or Sacred Kha Prao Tulsi (H23) and Horaphu Rau Que (H24) - both from Thailand and a new basil called Mrs Burns Lemon (V80256) - all of which sound very tasty and most interesting.  This catalogue also offers a good selection of Coriander varieties. Secondly, if you live near the sea you might be interested in growing Sea Holly  (H214). Another new seed is Stevia, which can be used as a sweetener in cooking/baking  (H80255).  Finally, I would like to mention the new Eskimo carrot, which has high tolerance to frost and disease and can be cropped over winter (V11133) and the new club root resistant sprout Crispus F1 (V10822). Added 24/10/2011

I would also like to draw your attention to the following new products and seeds I found in the 2012 Organic Gardening Catalogue (order codes in brackets):
  • Rocky F1 (CURK) is a new mini lunchbox cucumber and Fizz (KAFZ) is an unusual type of kale that produces leaves during the hungry gap. There are also three interesting new red leaved lettuces Continuity (LECO), Navarra (LENA) and Roger (LERV). Chocolate (CPCH) is an organic and quite delicious-looking, chocolate-coloured pepper and  Novella (PONO), Linda (POLN) and Trixie (POTX) are all new varieties of seed potatoes.  Finally, Christine (STCH1 & STCH2) is a very early strawberry although at the time of writing this hadn't appeared for sale online.  I would also like to mention their new Nature's Own Vegan Potting Compost (NOVP). A 40  L pack costs £14.55 and of course they also sell Fertile Fibre V Grow, which is also an animal free compost.
  • Kings Seeds have also just published their 2012 catalogue. This newly formatted catalogue is well set out and  a real pleasure to read. Consequently, I was mortified to discover that some of my pages where stuck together at the bottom. Now my pristine catalogue is a little ripped and jagged on some of the pages! I would like to point out that Kings are offering an excellent selection of sweet pea and pansy seeds as well as four unusual coloured cauliflowers. Other interesting new seeds include Scarlet (10609), which is a violet leaved Kale and Emir F1 (12906) a new melon that tolerates low temperatures.  If you would like to try growing a different kind of berry they have just brought out a new Tayberry and a loganberry.  I was also intrigued by their Cactus Mixture (54906) , although this isn't a new addition to their catalogue and patio gardeners may be interested in their selection of patio vegetable seeds such as Tumbling Tom tomato, strawberry Alexandria, pepper Apache and the Swift early potato.
  • Finally, in the 2012 Thompson & Morgan catalogue I spotted a new purple mangetoute pea called Shiraz (GAA4959); a white seeded broad bean named De Monica (GAA4942) that is sown in spring but matures at the same time as autumn sown Aquadulce so could be useful in colder areas of the UK, plus two interesting new courgettes - Sunstripe (GAA4950) and Zephyr (GAA4949)   They also sell a Jostaberry Bush for £14.99.                                                                           Added 30/09/2011
