DVD of Tolhurst Organics (Produced
by the Vegan Organic Network, 2008)
Farmer Iain Tolhurst demonstrates how people can be fed with food grown
stockfree, organically, ethically and sustainably.
On this short DVD, Iain Tolhurst, of Tolhurst Organic
Produce in Reading demonstrates how food can be grown using stockfree, organic
methods without the need for any animal products and few, if any, outside
inputs. Iain gives a most interesting guided tour of his 17 acres of
land, demonstrating how he produces his crops using a seven year rotation
system that's based on nitrogen-fixing green manures such as
lucerne and red clover, combined in some cases with a grass mixture. He explains
how he grows green manures to boost fertility for the first two years before
planting the crops: potatoes in year one, followed by brassicas, onions,
root crops and finally corn plus squashes undersown with a green manure in
year seven. I was amazed by Iain's beautifully-grown brassicas,
looking completely undamaged by cabbage white butterflies because parasitic
wasps eat the caterpillars. This DVD convincingly demonstrates the many benefits
of his system.
