Educational visits
Pupils of a local middle school learn about the preserved sand quarry machinery at Stonehenge Works, during one of their educational visits. This is just one of the historical artefacts we offer, which can be used as source material for a variety of subject areas, with different age-groups.
The Leighton Buzzard Railway provides teachers with a varied toolkit of educational resources, which can be used to support work at different Key Stages, or as part of the Learning Outside The Classroom initiative. Alternatively, it can just be a fun treat at the end of a long school year!
New in 2009 is our 90th anniversary exhibition about life in 1919--the year after the Great War ended, and the year our railway was built from war-surplus materials. This and other artefacts will provide stimulating input for a wide variety of curriculum topics.
We will provide information to help you tailor your own teacher resource pack ahead of your visit, together with the loan of a DVD. Prior familiarisation visits can be arranged for teachers, if required. A visit to the Leighton Buzzard Railway is particularly suited to primary and special school children.
On Wednesdays in June and July, we run a special timetable, designed to fit around the school day, but advance booking is essential. We can also operate on other days, by prior arrangement, and tailor our services to your needs.
Any group of 10 or more fare-paying passengers, booking in advance and travelling together on a scheduled train, gets a 20% discount on all fares, plus reserved seats.
Email us for more information, or to request a leaflet with booking form. Please give details of the kind of visit you are organising, and your preferred dates--and don’t forget a full postal address.
We also take part in curriculum-related programmes organised by The Greensand Trust, which develops educational initiatives using the resources of the Leighton Buzzard sand quarrying industry.
We are now taking enquiries for the 2010 season.
