Here are some images of our event on 7th-8th November, commemorating the opening of the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway in November 1919.
A fortunate wisp of cloud creates the illusion that it’s 1919 again, and a Hudswell Clarke “Ganges” class is waiting for its next sand train at Page’s Park. On loan from the Moseley Railway Trust, this sole surviving example in the UK requires a lot of work following its repatriation from Ghana, but was the first of its type to visit Leighton Buzzard since 1921.
History recreated at Page’s Park. On the left is a typical train of skip wagons full of sand, hauled by Simplex diesels. On the right is the passenger train, decorated with bunting in the style of the 1919 opening-day special, with a Union flag at the rear.
Dressed in 1919 period costume, the Home Front Friends pose for photos in front of “Doll”, also 90 years old in 2009., and the decorated passenger train.

See History Come To Life!
The Leighton Buzzard Railway is not just a train ride, more a living history lesson! At Stonehenge Works, you can see some of our working museum collection during your stay. And several time in the year, they come back to life for special displays.
Industry Trains
We recreate the long-vanished sights and sounds of the narrow-gauge trains that used to work in quarries, mines, factories and military establishments all over the country. There will be a special emphasis on our 1919 collection, and the transition from war to peace.

Sand Quarry
Our line was built in 1919, to carry sand from the quarries to the north of Leighton Buzzard, to the main-line railway in the town. Watch as our restored 10RB face shovel roars into life, and loads sand into authentic narrow-gauge trains, for transport to the tipping dock.
