This is a guide for adding a high brake light to a ford fiesta ghia MkII, the explanation is very similar for any model but some things may differ.
First thing to do is check that the light works, I mean we dont want to go to all this trouble and find that it doesnt work now do we!
Clean the back wondow with a soft cloth, it is also advisable to use some white spirit just to make sure it is perfextly clean. Offer the brake light to the window and mark the mounting position with a felt
pen of sorts. Once this is done, remove the protective cover on the sticky pads and press it against eh window to make sure there is a good fixing.
Now thats the easy bit done, next is the harder part. To make sure everything is accessible it is a good idea to remove all the trim on the side of the boot area. This includes the parcel shelf holder, and the trim on the back piller.
There are a few screws but it is all easy enough to remove. Once this is done pull back the carpet to reveal the rear bulb cluster (this is probably held in by a plastic stud).
Once this is done remove the light cluster and pull it out into the boot space. Disconect one of the connectors on the tail/stop light. Put on the side lights and see if the bulb lights up, if it does then the lead u have disconnected
is the correct lead, if not, then the second lead is the lead you require.
Next step is to connect the wires from the high level brake light to the leads in the light cluster. Connect the possitive wire from the high level brake light to the brake lead in the light cluster (the one you just disconnected).
Take the second wire and connect that to the earth lead in the light cluster, this can be found between the tail light bulb and indicator bulb. I used Scotch Lock connectors to connect the wires, these are simple to use and give a good connection.
The next step is to put everything back together, and bare in mind you have to hide the wire.
Firts put the light cluster back and then use some tape to tape the wire from the high brake light to the rear piller. Once done you can screw the piller trim over the wire and this does an excelent job of hidding the wire. Final thing to do is replace the shelf holder
making sure all the screws are nice and tight.
If You wish to test the light simply switch on the ignition, depress the brake pedal and put a screwdriver between the pedal and the dashboard. the simply jump out and admire the lovely job you have done installing your new brake light.
