Archie
(see also web searches)
Archie is an Internet service that allows searches to
take place on the indexes of most of the files available at anonymous
FTP sites.
These indexes are maintained on special Archie servers
located around the world. You need to know part of a file's name.
Wild cards can be used if the full name is not known.
A typical Archie server is Rutgers
University which can be accessed by typing the URL http://www-ns.rutgers.edu/htbin/archie,
in the browser location box.
Archie is great if you know anything about the name of
the file that you are looking for. But what if you are looking for
a file by a particular category which could be called almost anything?
The Internet provides search facilities for this situation. Most
browsers allow the user to access large search engines such as Yahoo

RFCs (Request for Comment).
This refers to a document put on a public FTP site so that other Net users
can read and comment upon it. Examples are RFC 1208 which is a large
glossary of networking terminology terms and RFC 1325 provides tips for
the new Interent user.
Gopher servers also provide
search facilities on the Net.
